Pretty much a empty threat by Russia, I doubt they will be dumb enough to use nukes.

It would be a lot easier and more effective just to cut production on oil and natural gas to run the price up on the Western powers.

Neither the Russians nor the US is going to start a nuclear war. These missiles are wasted military spending. Too bad. We don't need another Cold War.

War is a common behavior trait for Homo Sapiens.
Cold wars are better than hot wars.
Nukes are worth every penny...until someone uses one.

Why even bother telling anyone it is there, just build it.

DD, the Russians have satellites that can read the license plate on your car, just like we do. Sure, ours are better, but the Russkie's are damned good. Basically, we're just building the anti-missile site whether they like it, or not, and they seriously don't. We're also going to modernize the Polish military and put Patriot anti-air/missile batteries in Poland as part of the sweetener for the deal. While the Patriots may have limitations as anti-missile weapons, they are damned good at taking out aircraft. The Russians are NOT pleased right now. That's OK, because we aren't pleased with them, either.

You can put the blame for that on Putin and Bush.

    Impeach Bush/Cheney.

It would be ok if what we were building there was not a multi-hundred billion dollar non-functional missile shield that, even if functional, can be easily defeated with elementary countermeasures.

I wouldn't mind pissing Russia off right now but how about with something worthwile that offers the US some strategic value, rather than the non-functional phallic symbol left over from the Reagan era.

Sam, if the 10 anti-missile missiles we're putting in Poland enable that country to get a modern military and a US presence on their territory, it's a plus. Sure, the damn things won't work, and countless billions are still being poured into trying to create a missile defense system that does work, which you and I know can be defeated for a tiny fraction of the expense of this boondoggle, but it makes a largely uninformed public feel warm and fuzzy inside.

(and it ticks off the Russkies)

    Doesn't that make it worthwhile?

    Impeach Bush/Cheney.

I don't much like the Russian leadership now, but I agree with their position about missile defense in Poland. Installation of missile defense systems are more or less acts of aggression. I wouldn't tolerate either. And, I'm sure the Americans would have a similar stance if the Canadians agreed to put up Russian missile defense on their soil.

Explain how a multi-tiered, multiple phase intercept system is easily defeated by cheap countermeasures?

Are mid-course intercepts the trickiest of the bunch? Sure.... are there multiple kill KEI's undergoing testing on the D/L.... You bet.
