Man I'm a nerd. Well I netflixed Bad News Bears 2 - Breaking Training (filmed in 1976) and watched it while getting the place ready for game 7. It got to the part where Kelley Leak went to go find his father at his job and I was wondering where that was in Houston. So I googled "Texas Pipe Bending Co" that is on the sign in the scene. I found some results that showed "TEXAS PIPE BENDING COMPANY. 2500 GALVESTON RD. HOUSTON, TX 77017". I put that into Google Maps and got this: http://www.google.com/maps?q=2500+G...Texas+77017,+USA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&iwloc=addr It showed a address that was very close to my work so I went over there during lunch and sure enough it was the place. I took some photos. Here is the scene Here are the photos that I took today.
That's pretty cool to look at the differences. You can clearly see what 30 years does to a place. BTW, nice Rockets logo on the back of your truck!
I've done the same kinds of things with 70's movies filmed in Houston, actually. I've been trying to find the exact location of Gilley's on Google Earth for a while now. I would also be interested to know which diner they filmed the scene where Bud throws the burger at Wes and they fight in the parking lot.
the only Houston scene I recall is from Arlington Road. there's a short scene of Kurt Russel talking with someone at Univ. of Houston. i'm sure tehre are others i've seen but for some reason, that scene sticks in my mind. there's also Independence Day one where they're about to nuke Houston, but that didn't look like a genuine shot to me.
The field where they play the neighborhood kids is Eastwood Park, near Harrisburg and Lockwood...at least I think so.
The one where they have a practice? Wow. I eat lunch there sometimes. There is a little skate park there too. I will have to go check that out and confirm.
I used to walk the tracks right there on my way home from Milby H.S. Milby is also featured in that 80's high school classic "My best friend is a vampire". I remember watching Urban Cowboy and there is that one scene that Bud and Cissy are fighting outside the restaurant on Spencer (I think) and thinking how dark it was back then. Hardly any lights at all. Does anyone know the exact location of Aurora's house from Terms of Endearment? I've always wondered where it was.
The baseball field where the Bears are training is in real life, Bayland Park off Bissonnet in Southwest Houston. During the baseball training scenes, there is an advertisement for Discount Trophies (off South Post Oak), which went out of business in 1993. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075718/trivia
That's really cool. Speaking of movies filmed in Houston, did anybody see Reality Bites with Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke? I always wondered what part of town their house was in? There were some exterior scenes where you could see that downtown was fairly close, so it would appear it was inside the loop but I never knew where?
Kurt Russell wasn't the star or even in Arlington Road. You must be thinking of Billy D. Washington right before he was blown up. What about Terms of Endearment?
I grew up right down the road from it. Both Gilley's and the diner are long gone. The diner is now a parking lot of a flea market (Spencer and Shaver) and Gilley's is a grass field (Spencer and either Waters Rd. or Chile, I believe?). The Brake Check across from the diner is still there though.
oops, i meant Jeff Bridges. btw, are you referring to clutchfan's own Another Brother? i had no idea.
