This story is so hilarious, it inspired me to ask the question: What are really inappropriate songs for companies to play while a person is on hold? Naming specific companies and songs that are particularly inappropriate for them gets you bonus points. Enjoy. From the Chronicle: Briefcase: Holding the line? Listen to the music It doesn't take a genius to realize that the longer callers are left on hold, the more likely they are to hang up. But call-center technology firm Avaya has determined that inappropriate hold music can actually lead callers to hang up even more quickly than if they're just waiting listening to silence. A hospital that played Chopin's Funeral March for customers on hold, for example, failed to keep callers holding for long, while a clothing company specializing in items for larger women lost callers quickly when they had to hold listening to Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls. A poor choice of hold music can hurt the bottom line significantly, says Donny Ward, vice president of Avaya's Texas sales operations. "It's tantamount to saying, `You mean nothing to us as a customer -- go away,' " Ward says. Hold music should match the company's brand, the demographics of its customers and should be combined with technology that tells customers how long their wait will be, Ward says. So while truth in advertising is usually a good idea, playing Elton John's Rocket Man, with the refrain, "I think it's gonna be a long, long time," isn't. -- Tom Fowler ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
