He's walking away from arguably one of the best jobs ever. Aside from being a pro athlete, running a team is right up there. He's only 31 and quibbling over $1.5M/yr based on 3 years on the job and he thinks he deserves top GM pay. Who cares if Lucchino is a jerk. Cashman has been playing pinata for years. Fool. Enjoy the bread line. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2209574 BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein resigned Monday, surprising Boston and the baseball world just one year after he helped build the franchise's first World Series championship team since 1918.
Hell he got them to the World Series. . . I think he can hand pick any job he wants about now Rocket River
Damon walks. Manny wants out. Seriously, the Redsox are a mess. Theo will probably end up in Philly where he can build a championship team.
Either that or an AL playoff outfielder tested positive for steroids. according to my sources at BALCO
If you want more information on this story, just turn on ESPN. They are probably doing wall to wall coverage. All Yankees/Red Sox all the time.
Exactly!!! WTF? Sportscenter with 20 minutes on Epstein. PTI, Sports Reporters...hell, I think the NFL and NBA shows will do a segment on the guy. Whatever.
Bad decision? Doubt it. He's already a demi-god by helping put together the curse-lifting Boston squad (including the key Nomar trade). If the Sox waffle and go back to being 1st-round-only for the next few years despite the #2 payroll in the bigs, he'll get nothing but grief. Was it going to get any better for him? The team is on the verge of collapse, what with the Manny drama and Shilling's health. Plus, ever have a good job but under terrible supervisors/managment? I don't care how much you love what you're doing, you'll look for any excuse to leave. Epstein now has the freedom to latch on with someone that'll pay him at least as much as the Sox offered and be in a better position to rebuild. Personally, I think the best place for him would be the Dodgers. If he can return them to glory, he'd be the Parcells of baseball. Evan
you have got to be kidding me. this guy can get pretty much any GM job in baseball and can get more money doing it. and how is the job so amazing when your boss is being a dick and your best players want out?
Theo is capable, but he's no John Schuerholz who's done it for years. He was a gopher 3 years ago and the Sox gave him a chance. He's worked out great with the collective support of the Sox front office. 31 years old with 3 yrs experience and an offer to increase his salary over 4 folds to $1.5M. Schuerholz is getting $1.6M. Not to mention having the second highest payroll to play with. He should be on crusie control with this dream job for life.
