Check this out...comes from a friend in California: If you go to google, and do a search on a phone number that is listed (rather than unlisted), the name of the person, their address, and a map to their home will appear. This does not work for unlisted phone numbers. I think this stinks!!!! BAD GOOGLE!!!!!!
It's true... depending on how updated their information is. When I put my phone number in, it gave someone else's name and address. I put my mom's phone number in and it did give the address to the house, and offered to map it. I agree the Google people might want to rethink that...
Oh my God. Someone changed my name and address. Am I required to go by the name Google gave for my phone number (a phone number I've had for over two years now)?
It only seems to work for listed numbers, and not all of them. Mine and my brother's came up. I've had mine listed for 3 years. My brother has had his listed (in Maryland) for 15 years. My parents, who have had the same listed phone number in Houston since 1967, did not come up. Weird.
Actually had someone use that to threaten me once. But, if you allow your number to be published, it does end up in the phone records database. I asked Google to remove mine and they did. My number is unlisted now.
That's funny. In that case, my new name is Norene. I also have a new house. I'll have to drive by and see if I like it. I guess anyone currently using that name or house will have to cease and desist by order of the almighty Google.
maybe i'm searching wrong...where on google are you looking?? in the directory?? do you type it in with the dashes...like 777-777-7777...or without?
I wonder what NASA does with the pictures a satellite generates as it is about to fall on someones house.
man, i got nothing coming back on that at all...my number is unlisted..so i tried my business line..my family's lines...nothing. i guess that's a good thing.
I always wondered why people would want their number listed. What benefit do you get from letting everyone see your number and find out where you live?
In middle and high school, I wondered every year whether I should put my number in the student directory. You know you're going to get your share of annoying prank calls. But, I thought, wouldn't it be easier for hot guys to ask me out if they had the number? (that never worked, of course )
If you don't want it listed, you can ask Google to remove it. They do it very quickly (had mine removed a long time ago). At least they have a quick way for you to opt out. Remember, Google is the repository of all human information. It's doing its job.
Why is this such a shock? You can go to any number of phone books online and do the same thing. It's been available for a few years.
What's the big deal? If you know the person's address, just go to map quest they'll give you a map to their house. Why would you even need name and phone #. Heck, you can find ppls andress and map with just the name alone. I did like 5-6 years ago to get directions to my friends house.
