IMO Houston is truly back to being one of formidable NBA cities.. Our strip clubs, tax situation, young players, playing style and James Harden have really elevated us. Even our front office is pretty well known and regarded. Daryl Morey is putting his name in the history books as a person who helped to mold the way the league thought. As well, the work of Morey and Les Alexander with the mentally unstable really helps our image. If we strike out on Howard, Howard/Paul or Howard/Smith we need to go to Back-up Plan A. This would be Lebron James next year (seriously). Lebron James will have 2-3 championship rings after next offseason. Still a way to go to catch MJ (or even Kobe). Neither Dwade nor Bosh will be on the upswing after next season. Lebron James could go back to Cleveland but that would be very weird. I think Lebron James will head west. He will head west wanting to win. Probably not wanting to have to do it ALL. We have a tremendous thing going here. It has catapulted us back to being a very attractive destination. Such a difference from just a couple years ago. The same things that attract D12 could very come into our favor next year as well. I don't think it is as nearly far-fetched as one would think.
If the Rockets really thought they really had a legit shot to get Lebron in 2014 he wouldn't be backup plan A. Howard & whoever else would be plan B, C, & D. 3 years in a row of being in the Finals. Unless Wade and Bosh both suffer career ending injuries next year, Lebron will not be leaving Miami. If Howard doesn't sign in Houston, you stay flexible just in case another star player becomes available, but you take what you can get with star players. If your holding out for Lebron James to sign in Houston your 99% sure to be extremely dissapointed.
