I've been putting it off for several years, but i'm to the point now where I'm gonna have to get back surgery if I want to live the next 50 or so years of my life without pain.

A little background - About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs (L3/L4 - L4/L5). I had a few rounds of epidurals and that eliminated the pain up until about 2 years ago. Since then the pain has gotten much worse anytime I use my back. The doctors say that my MRI's these days show that my discs are degenerating, so basically I think there is not much left there. Another round of epidurals did nothing, disc decompression therapy did nothing. I have to pop vicodin regularly just to be able to do basic things without extreme pain. I have seen one surgeon out in W Houston, and honestly I didn't feel comfortable enough with him to let him slice on my spine. He said the surgery he would recommend for me is spinal fusion.

I know Houston is full of great surgeons and I'd like to go see the baddest mofo in town, which I assume would be in the medical center and not at some rinky dink hospital on the west side. Does anyone have any experience with someone you could refer me to?

    Harrisment,

My wife had 2 ruptured discs and got the "dynesis system" put in her back (google it for info). Her recovery time was about 2-3 weeks and she was completely pain free after 4 weeks.

Her Dr. is over @ Beechnut and 59. Dr. Stanley Jones (he was recommended to her by her aunt, who is the Dean of Nursing @ HBU).

I wish I knew this guy when I had my surgery 13 years ago. She checked 10 of his references (other folks who had the dynesis put in) and they all gave him glowing reviews).

I strongly reccomend getting the book below, before you get back surgery. My brother had extreme back problems for several years, with doctors prescribing surgery. Somehow he came across this book and he was able to almost completely eliminate the pain. I also was starting to have back problems recently and seemed to have nipped it in the bud after reading the book. Also read the Amazon reader comments. They help give you confidence that the book's not a lot of New Age bs.

Anyway, you can get the book used on Amazon for like 3 bucks, so its not like you have much to lose.

    Good luck.

My friend's ex-husband was part of the neuro group at Baylor College of Medicine -- I think she said Baylor / Methodist Hospital had one of the best neuro practice in the country.

I had microdiscectomy surgery after rupturing a disc when I had kidney stones (yes, I blew out my back writhing in pain... and then went to work a few minutes later). I had to have the surgery done because my leg was going to basically "die" because of the herniation. I was out the same day, but wasn't back to "normal" for another couple of weeks. Of course my leg only recovered about 90% of its strength/feeling, but it's better than having to drag it behind me, I guess. lol.

If you were in the Dallas area, I could recommend the neurosurgeon that worked with me. Absolutely the coolest doctor I ever met (and I've worked in hospitals).

maybe they could fuse some adamantium to your spine, or a rocket launcher.
