NBA thinking of banning 3-Pointers until end of game

The National Basketball Association is considering a plan to abolish the 3-point shot until the end of games to increase shooting percentages and make the sport more aesthetically pleasing.

The NBA may ban 3-pointers until there's five minutes left in the game in its development league this season, Stu Jackson, NBA senior vice president of basketball operations, said in a telephone interview. The National Basketball Development League season is scheduled to begin Nov. 19.

"We've talked about it," Jackson said. "We're wrestling with the idea." He said it was too early to tell if the NBA would change the rule.

"I don't want to jump that far ahead," he said. "It's a very radical change, certainly one that would take a great deal of time to get support if there were positive aspects."

Banning the 3-point shot until late in the game might lead to a more up-tempo style and higher shooting percentages because players would be encouraged to take shots closer to the basket. It also would stop players on fast breaks from pulling up for a shot from the three-point line instead of going for layups.

The NBA instituted the 3-point shot in 1979. Last season, teams shot a combined 34.7 percent from beyond the 3-point line, which ranges from 22 feet to 23-feet, 9-inches from the basket.

    Rules Changes
Tinkering or even overhauling the rules isn't uncommon for the NBA, which altered its guidelines allowing teams to play zone defenses before the 2001-02 season. Previously, only man-to-man defense was permitted.
One of the reasons the NBA started the six-team development league in 2001 was to use it as a testing ground for rules changes, Jackson said.
Steve Kerr, who made a record 45 percent of the 3-pointers that he attempted in his career, said he supports the elimination of the long-range shot.

"I kind of liked the 3-pointer before every player on every team was a 3-point shooter," Kerr, who won five NBA championships, said in a telephone interview. "It's being shot way too often these days and it's hurting the game. I wouldn't mind seeing an experiment that gets rid of it."

This is a TERRIBLE idea! What it would do is allow defenses to play ZONE and sag in the paint even MORE! If there isnt a 3pt shot to keep people honest then it will mean there isnt many lanes open! This is a disasterous idea. I agree that too many people shoot the shot. And I agree that people need to take higher percentage shots. But doing away with the 3pter except the last 5 mins of the game is a HIDEOUS idea!

    Thoughts?

This is the worst idea ever! My main problem with the rule is that it seems like this is something a gimmick league would come up with ala the XFL. It just sounds too hokey.

Sure, after the NBA done that, the Team USA will have even less chance to compete with the Europ teams.

Then they should move the 3pt shot in.. aligned with international standards.

It would make it easier to shoot.

Is it just me, or does this seem like yet another concession to "stars" with no jumpshot?

I think they should also have a 10 pt basket that is 10' higher than the regular goal.

Also, wouldn't it be cool if teams could trade players in the middle of a game?

Terrible idea. They should remove zone defense before they even consider this.

As far as Kerr's comment, it's like Mark Eaton coming out now and saying Block shots should not be allowed until the last minutes of the game.

Very stupid, it's not a sport if the rules can drastically change during the game. What is this, Rock & Jock Basketball?

My sentiments exactly. It actually sounds like a joke to me... sad to see they're serious.

If they want to increase scoring percentage, why don't they abolish the zone defense. Everyone had higher shooting percentages before this was instituted.

Except you can't get close to the basket due to the zone. LOL. Imagine how low the scores would be with no 3-pointers.

This league is on LIFE SUPPORT.

The league is just trying to put duct tape on this cracking dam.

What the league needs to do is promote increased fundamentals in the players which would improve scoring by better shots, shot selection and passing.

The problem is we have all these HS players coming in that seriously lack these fundamentals.

The league needs to start a REAL developmental league where the Darko's of the league can play there for a year and get experience.

Enough with these dorky rule ideas. Stop skirting the issue. The league needs to look DEEPER into the problem instead of resorting to gimicks to fix the underlying issue.

I think you guys are being way to hars... no, on this, even I can't contradict the prevailing opinion. This is a terrible idea. Besides being hokey, why would they think taking a scoring option away would increase performance? I'm not sure they realize but teams are also trying to maximize their scoring efficiency. If 3-pointers didn't improve their offensive attack, they wouldn't be shooting so many. 3-point threats open the interior allowing a better shooting percentage close to the basket. Removing 3-pointers would cause shooting percentages to drop.

    horrible idea.

i don't think this would even raise scores, i imagine the opposite possibly happening. ending the zone or limiting its use i think would be better.

This isn't really related but it's another thing I find stupid about the NBA. Watching the baseball playoffs, I notice how they don't even care that you can't watch every game, even in the championship series. You're pretty much forced to choose which game you want to watch. The NBA on the other hand, drags their first round out for like a month (they even extended to best of 7) just so every game gets its own spot on tv. Even then, the ratings aren't good. Stupid! You suck Stern.

3-point shot, zone defense, and the shot clock, these are all related. You can't just change one without considering how the others are gonna be exploited.

For example, allowing zone defense is a good thing, imo. But with the shot clock unchanged, the offense doesn't have enough time to develop plays to beat the zone. That results in too many forced shots.

I've always thought the 3-pointer somehow has a bad effect on the game. But as many here already pointed out, banning the 3 without also adjusting the zone rule and/or the shot clock is going to be bad.

Ultimately, the reason why players don't shoot midrange shots is because they can't. They can't because they don't hone the skill enough. Shooters in the old days used the pick so effectively to get off their midrange shots. Nowadays you hardly see that. Watching my kids play basketball, I suspect that the lure of the 3-pointer does have some effect on what young players aspire to.

Which is exactly what I was saying above. There is no development of the fundamentals.
