Scoop: Republicans secretly study their coming hell

Congressional Republicans are getting ready for hell. Axios has obtained a spreadsheet that's circulated through Republican circles on and off Capitol Hill — including at least one leadership office — that meticulously previews the investigations Democrats will likely launch if they flip the House.

Why this matters: Publicly, House Republicans are putting on a brave face about the midterms. But privately, they are scrambling to prepare for the worst. This document, which catalogs requests Democrats have already made, is part of that effort.

It has churned Republican stomachs. Here are some of the probes it predicts:

    • President Trump’s tax returns
    • Trump family businesses — and whether they comply with the Constitution's emoluments clause, including the Chinese trademark grant to the Trump Organization
    • Trump's dealings with Russia, including the president's preparation for his meeting with Vladimir Putin
    • The payment to Stephanie Clifford — a.k.a. Stormy Daniels
    • James Comey's firing
    • Trump's firing of U.S. attorneys
    • Trump's proposed transgender ban for the military
    • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's business dealings
    • White House staff's personal email use
    • Cabinet secretary travel, office expenses, and other misused perks
    • Discussion of classified information at Mar-a-Lago
    • Jared Kushner's ethics law compliance
    • Dismissal of members of the EPA board of scientific counselors
    • The travel ban
    • Family separation policy
    • Hurricane response in Puerto Rico
    • Election security and hacking attempts
    • White House security clearances
The spreadsheet — which I'm told originated in a senior House Republican office — catalogs more than 100 formal requests from House Democrats this Congress, spanning nearly every committee.

    • The spreadsheet includes requests for administration officials to be grilled by committee staff, requests for hearings to obtain sworn testimony, efforts to seize communications about controversial policies and personnel decisions, and subpoena threats.
    • These demands would turn the Trump White House into a 24/7 legal defense operation.
The bottom line: Thanks to their control of Congress, Republicans have blocked most of the Democrats’ investigative requests. But if the House flips, the GOP loses its power to stymie. Lawyers close to the White House tell me the Trump administration is nowhere near prepared for the investigatory onslaught that awaits them, and they consider it among the greatest threats to his presidency.

Its just amazing that "Election Security & Hacking" is seen as a partisan issue now, and something the GOP is openly discussing as something they are trying to PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM TALKING ABOUT with the electorate.

    Unbelievable.

Yes, I can't emphasize this enough. It is so crazy. You'd think that would be a given and both parties would agree on that issue.

If our GOP brethren were patriots and true stewards of our country all of these would be ongoing investigations today.

[BBC] Trump warns of 'left-wing violence' if Democrats win mid-term elections

US President Donald Trump has warned that his policies will be "violently" overturned if the Democrats win November's mid-term elections.

He told Evangelical leaders that the vote was a "referendum" on freedom of speech and religion, and that these were threatened by "violent people".

He appealed to conservative Christian groups for help, saying they were one vote away from "losing everything".

Mid-term elections are widely seen as a test of the president's popularity.

Mr Trump has been battling negative publicity after his ex-lawyer and former campaign chief were convicted earlier this month.

An audio recording of Mr Trump's closed-door meeting with Evangelical leaders at the White House was leaked to US media.

During the meeting, Mr Trump said the mid-term elections were not just a referendum on him but also "on your religion, it's a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment [guaranteeing basic freedoms]".

"It's not a question of like or dislike, it's a question that they will overturn everything that we've done and they will do it quickly and violently. And violently. There is violence. When you look at Antifa - these are violent people," he said.

Antifa - short for anti-fascist - refers to groups of far-left protesters who fight far-right ideology and regularly clash with far-right demonstrators.

The US president has previously criticised left-wing groups, infamously saying that there had been violence on "many sides" after a white nationalist killed a left-wing demonstrator at a white nationalist protest in Charlottesville last year.

Urging the Evangelical leaders to use their influence to swing voters, Mr Trump told them they had "tremendous power".

"In this room, you have people who preach to almost 200 million people. Depending on which Sunday we're talking about," he said.

"Little thing: Merry Christmas, right? You couldn't say 'Merry Christmas'," he added, according to US media reports.

Two of those who heard Mr Trump speak downplayed the remarks, according to a series of tweets by Sarah McCammon, a reporter from National Public Radio (NPR).

"Nobody walked out of there thinking that the Democrats were going to shoot us all," she quoted Jerry Falwell Jr as saying.

What's at stake in the midterms?

President Donald Trump himself is not up for re-election, but his ability to govern in the final two years of his term will hinge upon the 6 November outcome.

All 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 out of 50 state governors, along with many state and local offices, are up for election.

Republicans currently hold sway in both chambers of Congress and the White House. But some Democrats have been predicting a "blue wave".

On Tuesday a left-wing Democratic candidate beat better-funded centrist challengers to win his party's primary contest and will stand against Mr Trump's favoured candidate.

Andrew Gillum, who is currently mayor of Tallahassee, will oppose Ron DeSantis. If elected, Mr Gillum would be Florida's first black governor.

I hope not all of these will become active investigations. Investigating every sketchy thing from the Trump Administration would take up a lot of resources and Congressional time, and will quickly result in fatigue for the electorate as well. Democrats' reputation would be hurt by their desire to pursue every avenue. They'd need Congressional leadership to winnow the issues to the handful of the most important and the most easily proven, and drop the others. If Steve Mnuchin gets away with some stuff as a result, so be it.

    I wouldn't worry about that.

Time is one thing Congress has historically not had...and what time they have had...they've spent it on vacation...

...or is that what they call recess? Looks about the same from down here...

That’s funny. You would think that securing the border from hundreds of thousands of illegal invaders would be a given and something both parties would agree on. Isn’t the case though, sadly.

GOP loves this kind of hell. Gridlock is the only thing they know ever since they tried to govern with Bush, failed at it, then purged themselves of moderates and anyone remotely competent.

This is a blessing for them to peddle their lies and repackage the budget busting 1% tax cuts as they sandbag stall and complain about government inaction and waste

This is the biggest crock of BS "whataboutism" example I've ever seen.

    A. Nearly EVERY democratic elected official has voted EVERY TIME to continue to increase spending on national security and border protection. That's just a plain and simple FACT. Beto O'Rourke .... you know... that SOCIALIST voted in the most recent budget increase to the border security.

That talking point is garbage... pure fiction.

    B. Free and Fair Elections are what make a Democracy a true Democracy. If you believe Election Security is a NEGATIVE like you and your tribe obviously do also equate as a NEGATIVE.... you simply do not believe in Democracy at the core of what it means to our country.

What a bunch of unpatriotic un-American garbage. Go live in Russia if you really think this way.

Do you think they voted no because they don't want to increase spending on border security to combat illegal immigration, or because they didn't like these changes relating to legal immigration: "For legal immigration, it would end the diversity program and chain migration by eliminating the visa lottery green card program and green card programs for relatives other than spouses and minor children. And it would increase immigration levels for skilled workers and creates an agricultural guest worker program."

Actually, both parties agree that securing the border is important. The major difference in how both parties want to increase border security. Democrats believe in hiring more border agents, increasing the use of technology (video, drones, electronic border security) while republicans would prefer to build an expensive and less effective trump vanity wall.

sorry, but you are pointing to a single border proposal that focuses on the wasteful expenditure on the trump vanity wall. That does not disprove that O'Rourke and other Democrats support increased border security.

    You owe dobro an apology.

Funny that he's linking to a vote that didn't pass rather than skipping over the spending bills that DID PASS that Democrats continued to vote for which includes some wall/fence funding.

No the one in June didn't pass. 41 REPUBLICANS voted No to that bill as well. Why are he and other Trump cult fans saying that 41 REPUBLICANS do not care about security?

Spending bill from March that included wall funding-

Five Texas Democrats backed the bill: U.S. Reps. Henry Cuellar of Laredo, Al Green of Houston, Gene Green of Houston, Eddie Bernice Johnson of Dallas and Beto O'Rourke of El Paso. Six other Democrats voted against the legislation: U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio, Lloyd Doggett of Austin, Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen, Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston, Marc Veasey of Fort Worth and Filemon Vela of Brownsville.

    ..................

This argument is such a crock of BS though. Its all in the vein of whataboutism to have something .... anything... to counter the blatant fact that the Republican party of Trump and his cult 100% have abandoned Democracy. You just can't believe in Democracy, and view free and fair elections as a threat to extinguish.
