Awkward interview between Ricky Gervais and Garry Shandling

    I don't know if this has been posted before, but in England Gervais had these specials (Ricky Gervais Meets...) where he would meet his comedic heroes (Larry David and Christopher Guest) and they would talk for an hour or so, and they filmed it all. I watched both the David and Guest interviews, and they were all right, but his interview with Garry Shandling was beyond awkward. Shandling was another of his influences, but from the moment they meet there seems to be some hostility (mainly from Shandling).

    Some people believe it was staged, or they were just playing off each other, but it really didn't seem that way to me. In this article it says that Gervais had planned other interviews, but "the Shandling experience put him off for good."

    I think Shandling and he were sort of doing the awkward moments=comedy bits.

    I never really thought Shandling was funny, and I guess he doesn't like Gervais or his comedy, but isn't it ironic that Gervais (I don't know who the guy is, to be honest) states that his comedy is about portraying uncomfortable situations and making people think how they would react in those situations? It looked like he was in the midst of one such situation and didn't realize the irony as he stated it... :)

    Shandling is a genius, one of my all time favorite comedians and writers. He was great on the Comedian Award, where they were honoring Jerry Seinfeld. Both of his shows were original and very entertaining.

    Totally. He's an odd one, the weirdness is for real, but it's what drives him. Bad for him (well, not completely bad -- he could buy a yacht), good for us.

    I found the Shandling one first a couple of months ago and stayed up wayyy too late watching all three interviews. Highly recommended. The Guest one is great.

    Thats was really good stuff. Watched the whole thing and they worked well together.

    How much Botox does Shandling have in his forehead though! :eek:

    i've never seen an interview with shandling that didn't come across as awkward. that's just him.

    He seems to have a real problem with unwanted contact. A few times when Gervais touched him, he seemed a little put off by it, and one time when Ricky was reaching over to grab Garry's chair arm, Shandling actually sort of through his fist down as if to smash Ricky's hand, but Ricky moved it in time to not get hit.

    And then in that Bill Maher show, when he throws his hands up in the air as if on a roller coaster and Sean Penn grabs his arm and pulls it down, he immediately turns and kind of gets in Penn's face, although you can't really make out what he is saying.

    I'm very grateful to my parents for allowing me to spend a lot of time in their adult world, when I truly didn't deserve it. One of the distinct pleasures of my youth was watching the Garry Shandling Show when I couldn't have been any older than eight years old. Maybe seven. It was such a wonderful affront to my Sandy Duncan Show-bred sensibilities. Everything I'd seen on TV until then hardly seemed to matter. It wasn't the funniest thing going on, but it was DIFFERENT. That counts for a lot.

    Shandling's been passed over quite a bit, but he truly is one of the giants.

    Shandling comes off kinda assholish in the interview. He's a really funny guy though. I guess he just doesn't like contact.
