I am hoping the Rockets get this guy. I want him on the Rockets coachin staff, because I think he is going to be a great NBA coach. He has all the tools to be a great one. He has leadership, high basketball IQ, etc., he has it all. I don't think Les would just hire him as the the head coach because he has not coached before. I just think he should be looked into, what do you think?

Avery Johnson and Mario Elie is a nice tandem to start with. However, lets not forget we definitely need a veteran/proven assistant also. Who that may be, I have no clue.

    Any suggestions?

I am pretty sure that if Dunleavy is our man....there will be a phone call the Avery Johnson...it's a hunch but i'm pretty sure the rockets connection will find it's way to Johnson.

I hope so, I could see Johnson as the future head coach fo rhte Rockets. I would not mind Dunleavey with Johnson and Elie as assisants. Or even Silas or Jordan.

I like carlisle as our head coach with Avery Johnson and Mario elie as assistants. Make the deal with Carlisle for 3 years - fire him like Detroit did after 2 years - then make Avery the head coach...

We can do this - do not hesitate CD......

He is in an ideal environment. I think he has very good coaching potential, but he just finished his career, now he should spend 2-5 years of a good coach like Nelson, Brown Sloan or the likes of, and then take over a team.

He will be a head coach, I do not think now is his time (anywhere).

but hes just so young! think of the children! seriously though, ive always thought player coaches were kind of strange. not that hed play for us but hes still on the mavs active roster as a player. all the other young coaches waited a good few years before making that transition (unless theres someone im not thinking of). do you think the players would have a hard time respecting someone so young and freshly removed from playing?

ive always thought the guy was pretty charismatic and a good smart guy, so assistant coach? right on the money!

I'd hire him in a second.

Avery knows the game, both from a point guard standpoint and from a psychological stand point. He knows x's and o's. And he knows leadership (the guys just has the persona of a "leader"). Don't let his size fool you. He's a "Little General!"

Also, Avery has "been their done that" with the Spurs. He knows what pressure is all about.

I've like Avery Johnson as a player and have nothing but respect for his intelligence and skills. But I just can't imagine real inspiring halftime or press conference speeches considering his voice is almost at Michael Jackson's level.;)

I think I would fall over laughing hearing him yelling "Never undersestimate the heart of a champion!"

Howabout that guy who plays the President on 24 for coach? I don't know if he has any basketball skills but he's sure got presence.

Yeah, I've though about that. Kinda of a funny comparison.

Although, Avery is a humble guy. But he's not soft-spoken.

Avery has a Southern Cajun accent...
It takes you off guard the first time you hear him, but after a few minutes you realize the guy knows what he's talking about.

I like the idea of Avery as an assistant coach. I like even better the idea of Avery as a player and assitant coach. Anybody here rather have Mooch over Avery as backup point?

I would love to have this guy on as a coach. He knows how to run an offense and how to recognize and adjust to defenses. When he ran the point for the Spurs you always knew they would win close games simply because they would execute their plays perfectly down the stretch. I've heard the Nelson will sometimes leave practice early and let Avery finish running the practice by himself, so he should have some experience.

He'll be a great coach somewhere, and I hope that it's in Houston.

That would be cool to have Dunleavy as Head, and Avery and Mario as Asst. They would all be Rockets alumni coming back to support their team. In addition, I'd like to see Moses Malone as a big man coach, John Lucas and Calvin Murphy as a Guards coach.

He played for the Rockets in the 1991-1992 season. The Rockets gave him up as part of a trade to San Anotnio.

According to the Chronicle, Cuban has said he will not allow Johnson to speak with other teams about coaching vacancies because he still has a year left on his deal and is considered a valuable member of their staff. Oh, well.
