This is one story which I think I will remember forever...the potential that was wasted. Very tragic.

Agreed. Definitely the saddest sports-related story I heard this summer.

    RIP.

Man how did they even figure this out I heard everything was just torched. It's very sad.

I thought his body and the car were completely burned and they had to use his dental records to figure out who he was -- weird, but not surprising at all.

I guess the only slightly positive spin on this development is that this casts doubt on the suicide speculation. Maybe the life insurance company (if he had insurance) will pay his beneficiaries.

Thank-you I read the article, but the original report said everything was burned to ashes.

Basketball aside, what a shame this kid couldn't get a handle on his illness and save his own life. The silver lining is that he hit the train instead of an oncoming car, sparing anyone else from injury or death.

    RIP, Eddie. :(

No, they did not say burned to ashes  , they said bdly burned:

Griffin's body was badly burned and there was no initial identification. Dental records later revealed the man was Griffin. Chief investigator for the Harris County Medical Examiner's office in Houston, said the cause of death and toxicology reports are pending

they even said that toxicology reports were pending, implying that there was body tissue/fluid available to be tested.....just saying.

the reason why they couldnt initially identify him is because all fingerprints were gone and the face was probably too badly burned to make a recognition from.

police wont make an identification based solely on the vehicle as it might not be the owner.

even a badly burned body still has enough internal organs and fluids to be able to determine how much alcohol/drugs was in the body

question is, is it better or worse that it was an DWI-accident over suicide(as initially speculated)

I guess insurance-wise, its better....but isnt it socially worse to be drunk driver over a suicide?

I cant really say which is considered worse in today's society.

    and again...RIP Eggie :(

Its guys like Eddie Griffin that sometimes make me frustrated with the universe. All that talent in someone so troubled.

I feel so bad for this kid. So much stacked against him, and so much to prove and all he ended up doing is living a joke of a life. Always makes me think of that article where it talked about his sister(?) holding his hand on the way to school. Hopefully, other youngsters will heed the Eddie Griffin lesson.

The article says that the cause of death was "multiple blunt force injuries". I'm hoping his death was instantaneous and didn't feel the pain of burning to death.

Life insurance doesn't always withold payment for suicide. There is usually a clause that prevents payout if you bought the insurance within the last X number of months.
