my check engine light is on, and I took it to Autozone to figure out what is going on. The thingie at Autozone said it was the EGR, which is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

    I drive a 99 Tacoma Prerunner.

The dude at Autozone said it may be blocked or air is restricted by some carbon, and I may not have to replace it, just clear it out.

Is it easy to take on and take off or go to the dealer or a mechanic?

Has anyone had this done before?

I gotta do my inspection real soon.

    edit.
    Oh yeah.

I am going to look at alldata's website tomorrow to see if it looks easy.

had that happen on a Isuzu Trooper and it was about $300 to clean.
If you ignore it eventually you car will have problems/stop starting.

I'm not sure about yours but mine was easy to get to all the bolts but 1. And it was that 1 bolt that made me take it in to the shop. The bill was around $300 to replace.

I had a ford ranger '98 that I replaced the part myself and it was easier than crap. The part cost me like $30 at o'rielly's. super easy on a ranger. take off a bolt or two and pull off a couple hoses and replace.

I'm hoping that all it takes is to clean it out. If I have to replace it, it looks like 170 bucks.

I'm still searcing Alldata's website to see if it tells me how to remove it.

IF you look at it , it should be pretty easy to take it off. Just spray some carb cleaner in it. that is a good solvent for engines.

If you don't know what you are doing, you may not want to take your car apart.

Make sure you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads

Oh, the humanity! The dreaded EGR valve... damn them. Damn them all to hell!!

(imagine that I said that using Charlton Heston's voice, instead of my usual Harrison Ford)

Don't take it apart. Take the assembly off the car...spray it, drain it, spray it, drain it, spray it drain it, let it dry, reinstall.

Check the muffler bearings while you've got the hood up.

I've had the same thing wrong with my car for about a year (been putting it off until it's time to renew the inspection). To be honest, I haven't noticed a single thing wrong with the way the car runs. Let us know how things work out for you. :)
