GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities in Gainesville have charged Chicago Bulls forward and former Florida star Joakim Noah with possession of mar1juana and having an open container of alcohol.

Gainesville police spokesman Sgt. Rick Roberts said Noah was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Sunday after an officer spotted him on a sidewalk holding a plastic cup containing an amber drink, a violation of city law. During a search at the station, officers found mar1juana in his pocket.

Noah was released after signing a notice to appear before a judge -- standard procedure for such offenses. He could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for the mar1juana charge.

Noah led the Gators to back-to-back national championships before being picked ninth overall in last June's draft by the Bulls.

    Coaches hate him? Check.
    Teammates hate him? Check.
    Questionable work ethic? Check.
    Discipline issues? Check.
    "Distraction" and "Cancer" labels? Check.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say this kid might be playing for a different team next year.

Wow, so hes facing up with 6 months in jail for walking with a cup of alcohol and having a small amount of weed in his pocket? Obviously he won't do time because he has money now, but some regular dude would have to face that time. Pretty ridiculous for a non-violent crime.

Too many people go to jail for victimless crimes. It's out of hand. I hate these substance laws.

    Agree on punishments for weed.

But hey, I hope the Bulls get Beasley and Noah can start looking forward to the Clippers phase of his career.

First, Noah is a supreme idiot for walking around w/ an open container and weed in his pocket. I can't even figure out why he's back in Gainesville right now...visiting friends?

While I have no sympathy for anyone getting caught doing something illegal and paying the price for whatever the law mandates, I have to admit that 6 months for this seems a bit high. Hulk Hogan's kid was involved in a DUI accident that left his friend in a vegetative state, and he's only in jail for 8 months.

So long as they can play, what players do in the offseason is their own damn business. It's hypocritical from Noah to be lambasted for mar1juana use in the months he has off, when players regularly go out and destroy their bodies with alcohol night after night during the season.

I'm going to have to disagree with most here, I'm not convinced Noah is total trash. He is a defensive hustle guy who, if introduced to the jumpshot could demand attention. Not saying I think he has superstar potential, but I think his career has 10-14 season potential I'd take him this offseason if the Bulls are willing to sell low.
