from their site: If you’re thinking you don’t know Billy D. Washington, don’t be too hasty, ladies and gentleman. For one thing, if you happened to be spending some time in Houston several years ago, and happened to stray outside the lines of legal behavior--we’re not saying criminal behavior, necessarily, but something that would typically involve a response by a cop--you might well have encountered BIlly, back in the days when he was a member of the Houston police department. But with any luck, you’ve crossed paths with him at some point after he was one of Houston’s Finest, and had embarked on a multi-faceted showbiz career. Of course, first and foremost, he’s a top-notch stand-up comedian--that’s why he’s appearing at good ol’ Cap City. But he’s also an enormously talented musician, who often incorporates some deft keyboard playing into his comedy act. In fact, he’s so gifted and dazzling on stage--and this also brings us to another possible place where you might’ve brushed up against Billy--that after opening a concert in 2000 for Aretha Franklin, she was so was blown away by Billy, became such an instant fan, that he’s been her opening act from the moment. Heck, you also might know Billy from television--not just the usual stand-up TV fare, but as a host of various program on VH-1. We could go on, but the key point is that you probably do know Billy D. Washington--we just think you’ll be happy if you get to know him better this week at Cap City. With Joy Gohring. http://www.capcitycomedy.com/comedians/billy_d_washington.html
Hey AB, I'm a student in Austin and every weekend I go to the Velveeta Room for my comedy fix. What's the difference between the two in terms of size, price, location, etc? Besides the fact that you're performing at one and not the other this weekend. Also, do you ever hit the Velveeta Room? It's a fairly small club and I'm pretty sure that most of the crowd each weekend is comprised of drunks that they managed to wrangle off 6th street to watch some comedy. Other than me and the comedians, I don't see too many regulars. Either way, good luck tonight.
I used to go there my freshman year in college. They wouldn't ID us or anything, so we could drink all we wanted to. The three people that starred in that MTV show based in Austin were regulars. We heckled Laura House one night and really pissed her off. She tried getting the bartender over to card us. One of my favorite jokes was told by the stocky guy from Austin Stories, Chip Pope. He was talking about how his mom grew up in Pampa and never swore or anything. One day he walked into the kitchen when his mom burned her hand on the stove and said, "oh, fiddlesticks". He had this look of horror on his face and said, "Mom, I hope that's not the same mouth you use to suck dad's ****!" Anyway, Another Brother, I'm pissed we missed you the last time you were in town. My wife is dying to see your act. If her childhood friend wasn't coming in from out of town this weekend, we'd be there. EDIT: Billy, a co-worker of mine's son is heading to Austin this weekend. I just gave her the info and told him to tell you hi if he makes it.
I need more than a one day warning to get babysitters. No matter, I would just sit in the back and scream out "you know why the Astros lost? Not enough African American players." DD
Billy D mentioned as a top pick for Saturday on the Austin360 Calendar: http://www.austin360.com/calendar/content/events/index.html
