    New basketball team's name: Toros
    The National Basketball Association has the Chicago Bulls. Now, Austin has its own dribbling bulls.



    The Austin Toros is the name of the city's new NBA Development League minor-league basketball team. The new name was unveiled Wednesday during a news conference at the Austin Convention Center. "Toros" means bulls in Spanish.

    The name has an obvious "Hispanic-latino influence," says Mike Barry, president of the Toros. Nearly one-third of the Austin area's population is Hispanic.

    "Look at the make up of this area. ... You see how diverse of a town Austin is," Barry says. Austin is a "fast-charging, very competitive, fast-paced town. ... Hopefully, we're fast-charging and dynamic, too."

    He says the team mascot is still in development, but the new logo shows a charging bull driving through Central Texas.

    On Aug. 20, the team is scheduled to name a coach. Barry says the coach will be familiar to Texans.

    Austin's inaugural season tips off Nov. 25 in Arkansas. The following day, the Toros debut at the Austin Convention Center.

    Yeah not too sure what to think. It doesn't SUCK...but it's also not that impressive....can't find the logo yet...

    I've thought for a few years that Austin is ready for one of the smaller-audience pro francises, either NBA or NHL. I always pulled for the name 'Austin Statesmen'. Just has a nice ring.
