An Indonesian court has found Australian woman Schapelle Corby guilty of smuggling drugs into Bali and sentenced her to 20 years in jail.

This case wasn't a slam dunk. There was plenty of doubt. I think she may be guilty, but 20 years for 9 lbs of pot is crazy. Especially from the same country that gave a 30-month jail term for a radical cleric linked to the Bali bombings that killed 200 people.

Apparently, she could have been sentenced to death by firing squad, but since she was polite in the courtroom, the judge was "lenient" and only gave her 20 years. I don't know why anyone would go vacation in hostile countries. Lybia is nice this time of the year for vacation too.

I have no idea what their legal code is like, but 9 pounds is a lot of weed.

true. but 20 years? that cleric killed over 200 people and only got 30 months. she got 240 months for A PLANT!

95% of Aussies believe her to be innocent. She claims baggage handlers put the pot in her bag as part of their drug smuggling operation.

the judges in this case paid ZERO attention to her defense. they were seen reading books and making phone calls during her defense

the prosecutor in the case is appealing the sentencing, he wants her to get life, talk about f'ed up!

Although the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime in this case, I do think foreigners have to think twice before they bring banned substance into another country. In much benevolent and western-friendly Singapore, the lady would have faced similar if not more harsh sentence if allegations proved to be true.

Why would anyone want to smuggle pot from Australia to Indonesia in the first place? You'd think the flow of such goods and trade to market would be vice versa

The only reason that I think she may be guilty is because the drugs were in her boogie board bag, which would look like this:

This is what 9lbs of pot looks like:

This would be noticable. Nonetheless, the whole thing very suspect.

Obviously the Aussies would support their own. I think she's probably guilty because 9lbs is very large for a person but very small for an organization such as the mafia or gangs. Why would they plant evidence on such high-profile person? Just very strange. That said, 20 years seems to be overkill. Maybe, 5-8 years would suffice.

First offense for that much in the US is not more than 5 years. Second offense is not more than 10 years.

One of the first things you see at the airport in Bali is a sign that says "DEATH FOR DRUG TRAFFICKERS" and they're serious about it.

I don't know enough to judge the guilt or innonce of this person but you would be an idiot to try and smuggle 9 pounds of weed into Indonesia in so obvious a fashion.

FYI, there's a sign saying the same thing when you land in Singapore.

That cleric has a lot more political support in Indonesia than some drug carrying aussie chick.

Not saying its right just that that's the way it is.

a joint or two is one thing, but 9 pounds! if she is truly guilty, than i dont really feel sorry for her, and im a smoker myself. im sure she was fully aware of the consequences of her actions, and if not, she is stupid.

i travel to mexico every summer and not a day goes by down there that i dont get offered pot or coke, but i wouldnt even think about indulging when south of the border. just not worth the risk.
