Inspired by the bus movie thread, i thought i should reccommend some Australian movies that a worth a watch if you have access to them.

    More Recently

Getting Square - saw this last weekend, funny, fast moving heist movie..... see it

Hardword - starring Guy Pearce and Rachel Griffith (6ft under) another great heist movie

Travelling Light - looks great won a lot of awards at the recent aussie film awards supposedly very good, will sit it soon

Japanese Story - Toni Collette, won a lot of awards at the recent aussie film awards supposedly very good, will sit it soon

The Bank - from a few years ago, starring David Wenham (in LOR) i really loved this moved, great drama about a guy getting screwed by the bank and getting them back

Lantana - perhaps the best Aussie movie in recent years... do not miss this one

Rabbit Proof Fence - the other classic in recent years.... brilliant

Bad Eggs - dirty cop comedy... a laugh

CrackerJack - Hilarious movie about a guy who inherits some car parks at the local bowling club (lawn bowls) and then rents them out as it is a busy area, the lawn bowls club is going under so they have make sure all members are active and playing to stay a float, so this youngish guy and loat has to start playing,............ very very funny

Dirty Deeds - a movie about the underworld and poker machines in sydney in the late 60s and the attempt by an american to come in a take over the aussie underworld gusy territory, stars John Goodman as one fo the american heavies.... funny stuff and a great story aswell

Ned Kelly - Heath Ledger as the classic tale of the aussie Bushranger, not bad, enjoyable

Australian Rules - definitely a movie of two halves - the first being a fairly light look at a small South Australian fishing town and its love of its resurgent football team - then it moves inexorably into the dark territory of racism, domestic violence, abuse and death

    Older

Shine - a few years ago now Geoffrey Rush won an Oscar for his performance as the pianist David Helfcot...... great stuff

The Castle - the definitive movie about the definitive Aussie Bloke

The Dish - great movie about a satellite dish in australia and it's contribution to man walking on the moon..... great laugh (also co-stars Putty from Seinfield)

Romper Stomper - Rusell Crowe in a movie about a gang of right wing fascists

Muriel Wedding - set to an appropriately great Abba soundtrack about a young woman growing up, great fun, with some heavy dark message in the background

Two Hands - one of my favourites, Heath Ledger first lead role

Young Einstein - nothing to say just amazingly funny........ classic

BMX Bandits - Nicole Kidman first big screen movie, about her and her 2 mates and the adventures in the BMX bikes, a amazing look back at a now star

Bad Boy Bubby - classic cult aussie movie, filmed in a suburb 5 minutes from my house about a mentally challenged man you lived in a house with his mum and then one for the first time gets out, weird, funny and strange but a classic

Sum of Us - Russell Crowe as a gay young man and Jack Thompson as his dad, a great laugh and a great relationship story

Priscilla Queen of the Desert - Hugo Weaving, Stamp and Guy Pearce in a Drag Queen movie in the Desert, a great romp

    Strictly Ballroom
Despite rules and family differences, a couple find love and win the national ballroom championship. Ballroom dancing made somewhat of a come-back as a result of the film. A feel-good movie without expensive special effects, without excessive violence and without high-speed car chases!

Babe 1 and 2 - the pig movie

    Mad Max - classic Mel

Galliopoli - great aussie war movie

Yes, it does. Crocodile Dundee, IIRC, is the highest grossing foreign film ever in the USA>

I personally liked "Once Were Warriors"

Okay, so it's a New Zealand film. That's close enough right?

    :)

They played the trailer for this movie on one of my movie channels yesterday. I was thinking it looked like something worth watching.

The Hard Word. That was the one I was talking about seeing (and I see you answered in the other thread). I enjoyed it. Worth checking out, in my opinion.

    The Coca-Cola Kid.

And Why do I nominate this Film? Let me borrow a line from some guy named spaulsonesq at Imdb.com

"Because Greta Scacchi does not burst naked from a Santa Claus costume in an explosion of feathers in all that many movies so when it happens, praise MUST be given."

I thought Romper Stomper was excellent.

I saw it before I knew who Russell Crowe was.

I know this is off the subject but Carrie Ann Moss, has to do a movie with Terence Stamp to complete the Priscilla Queen of the desert Triumvirate.
If anyone remembers she starred with Hugo Weaving?? in the Matrix and co starred with Guy Pearce in Memento both great movies. Matrix II and III both sucked BTW.
It strikes me as odd or is it just good acting that these three guys can play some of the most UGLY gay people in one film and heartless tough guys in other movies.

I really liked The Interview staring Hugo Weaving. Kind of similar to the Usual Suspects.

That was a pretty good movie. It's probably a bit hard to relate to the situations that those characters were going through, but it's a good story nonetheless.
