Word is that the EGM review of Lair is not fantastic. Really disappointing. Some complaints about the 6 axis control. I might be canceling my pre-order. We'll see what IGN and Gamespot says.

No one here has a beta test of Warhawk online right? I wonder that that is doing.

yeah, liar looked like a stinker.

the online and wide variety of fighting styles looks interesting for warhawk...but its all in the execution of the game. Im a little skeptical that they didnt add single player. The guy said they just couldnt get it right, sounds rather weird. BUt having a ton of friends and throwing a multitiered attack by land and air has potetnial.

EGM/1UP/Ziff Davis/etc is the worse source for game reviews IMO. They also blasted Blue Dragon in the same issue (average to below average scores IIRC), and that game has a score of 89 at Metacritic right now (mostly based on the Japanese/Asian version I guess). I could go on and on about their terrible reviews (or reviewers), but I'll just stop there.

That said, I'd still be very cautious of Lair, especially in regards to the gameplay and controls. It seems like a must-rent at the very least just based on the great visuals, presentation, and story though (IMO anyway).

The decision to go multiplayer-only was made months ago, and they explained their decision rather well IMO. You should probably read up on some of those older articles if you're that curious.

IIRC, they've stated that they might add single-player content (I'm assuming from the scrapped single player campaign) if there is demand for it later.

You really think so? That is the first place I go for review/previews. I enjoy both their reviews and previews equally. They have always seemed to be in tune with my likes/dislike in the past and what I enjoy playing up to this point in time. With that said, I never take another person's opinion as the end all, be all to whether I'm going to get a game or not. I look to a review to see some of a game's strengths and weaknesses. Not to tell me whether to buy it or not. Perhaps other people are not like me and look to reviews for other reasons besides those, but I thoroughly enjoy most of their reviews. Of course, I disagree with a fair share of their opinions and interests. Like why the heck aren't more reviewers/previewers talking about Smash Bros. Brawl. The biggest selling game on Wii will not be Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, or Zelda, it will be Brawl. That goes for all publications, though. *Yeah, I know Nintendo won't reveal anything about the game, but dangit EGM, use some of those connections, Lol*

I digress, do go on about your disdain for their reviewers. I'm very interested to know why.

Looks like a great month for X360, when compared to what PS3 has to offer.

    MoH: Airborn > Warhawk
    Blue Dragon = Lair
    Madden 360 > Madden PS3
    Bioshock >> nothing
    Stanglehold august > Stranglehold september

I'll mostly be referring to their online reviews from 1UP since it is a bit difficult to track down the full reviews from their magazines, although since some EGM reviews are identical to the 1UP reviews, it doesn't really matter that much.

The biggest problem I have with their reviews (at least online) is how little info they give on the games. For example, when I was looking at reviews for MLB 07 The Show, their reviews certainly didn't help (9 short paragraphs for the PS3 version, a few of which were just fluff...better than their 5 paragraphs for the PS2 version); they didn't even mention a number of things about the game (RTTS, Franchise mode, online play, why a better version of the PS2 version doesn't make it better than MLB2K7 when the PS2 version was already stated as better, etc.), and the things they did talk about turned out to be inaccurate after I played the game myself. At least it wasn't as bad as their review for Tekken 5: DR for the PSP; it was only 2 short paragraphs, and only one of them actually provided any details about the game (and this was a big profile game at the time). I could list several other games since I think they actually have a rule about how brief their reviews must be. There may be some advantages to this I guess, but as a personal preference, I just can't really find any value in reviews that are this short. Too many details about a game are never even discussed.

Beyond that, I also don't like how unprofessional their review staff is at times. For example, apparently they edited their review for Killzone Liberations a few weeks after the review was released in order to not make the reviewer look like an idiot (forgot what he said that was wrong...think it was something about the online component). Some people online called them out about it online, but they refused to even admit that they changed the review. Of course, the review of the game itself was pretty bad too (they gave it a 5.0, while IGN gave it a 9.0, Gametrailers a 8.5, Gamespot a 8.3, etc.), but that's not very unusual as I've already illustrated with other games. I disagree with a lot of their reviews, but that's not even the biggest issue I have with them.

That said, I do love the 1UP Show and their various podcasts (mostly 1UP Yours). There are a few members of the staff whose contributions to the site (or various magazines) I really appreciate.

Yeah, that's definitely true. Although FWIW, I'd probably do it more like this:

MoH: Airborne August >> MoH: Airborne November (though sixaxis controls are tempting  ).
Blue Dragon = Lair (though not really comparable)
    Madden 360 > Madden PS3
Bioshock = Warhawk (though not really comparable at all either)
Two Worlds > nothing (though Two Worlds may suck)
Stanglehold August = Stranglehold September (thanks to Hard Boiled on Blu-ray ;))

Last one is kind of a joke though, unless you're just a big fan of that movie.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I think Tekken PS3 goes online this month (at least in Japan). So I guess that might be another thing to look forward to for PS3 owners.

Actually I wanted to update those comparisons I made since I now have seen all of the videos posted here:

After seeing the videos I must say that Warhawk and Lair look pretty impressive. I think Bioshock and Lair have the best chances of being the game of the month, with Bioshock having a slight advantage. The main advantage that 360 has over ps3 will be madden since it runs smoother on 360.

Bioshock > Lair (specially if the early reviews aren't that good)
Blue Dragon = Warhawk (although impossible to compare, they cancel each other out)
    Madden 360 > Madden ps3
Stranglehold and MoH are equaly impressive on both systems.

Although I do not own a next gen system now, I'm planning on buying a 360 by the end of this year when all the big name games come out and after the price drop.

Lair definitely won't beat out BioShock for GOTM, at least based on what I've seen (maybe it will sell better...though hopefully MS and 2K games have done and will do a great job of promoting BioShock). Warhawk probably has a better shot from the PS3 side, and I only say that because there is a lot of value behind the purchase, especially if the game turns out to be any good. FWIW, I'd probably rank them like this: BioShock > Blue Dragon (partly because I'm a RPG fan) >= Warhawk >= Lair. Lair sure is pretty though. :)

Of course, having played none of them, my ranking doesn't really mean much.

To follow up on what I said earlier, the online version of Tekken is now available on the PSN in Japan (I think), and it will be available on the US store in mid-August.

BTW, a bit OT, but the president of Sony's worldwide studios seemed to take a jab at EA for making Madden 30 FPS on the PS3. Guess they're not too happy about it, although he did seem to admit some blame for it (still rolling out some development tools that might help out EA a lot).
