. . . Dinosaur Rock Band I've been hearing the band's song "Cochise" either on the radio and MTV recently and the first thing that pops in my head is "We have the Damn Yankees of the new millenium." 4 guys from famous (but now disbanded) groups get together and try to prove that they still have the mojo. Unfortunately, it seems to me that Audioslave (like Damn Yankees) is less than the sum of its parts. Chris Cornell's voice has lost the amazing range heard onUltramega OK and now sounds more like a constipated Brian Johnson (AC/DC) And Tom Morello's riffs all sound like outtakes from Led Zepellin II. He (and the other ex-Rage members) continue to play the same lead-footed, one-dimensional stuff that they did 10 years ago on RATM's debut album. While this isn't any worse than the hordes of Korn-wannabes playing their two-string, dropped-A, Dual rectifier on 11 mush, it really isn't an improvement either. Maybe I'm being hard on Audioslave because I really thought it could have been an interesting project. While Cornell's voice has deteriorated, his lyrics are interesting and he's great at writing cool riffs in odd time signatures. If you had combined these talents with Morello's ability to use the guitar more like a random tone generator, you might have had a good album. Sorry for the rant. Anyone else have an opinion?
Though Zach de la Rocha is a much better vocalist IMO, i do like the sound of their new CD. I'm thinkin of buying it...they played the whole thing through with Tom Morello interviews between songs on a local station TWICE....it's pretty decent.
I always love subatomic music reviews and agree to a limited extent. You can definitely hear the "Rage" in Audioslave and Cornell has naturally lost some of his vocals(as do most rockers that get older), but there is also some freshness to the sound. As a whole I like the album.
