    OK...here is the situation:

As I posted a few weeks ago, I have purchased a Sony Net MD Mini Disc Recorder and a Sony 717 stereo microphone. The combination records like a dream. Excellent quality. I set it up on my coffee table and recorded a couple of tunes with my Gretsch. The sound quality is amazing. I purchased a cable with two 1/8" stereo plugs, and I can plug one end into the headphone jack on the Mini Disc recorder and the other end into the in jack on my sound card, and the Mini Disc plays over my computer speakers.

What I need now is software that will allow me to burn a CD in real time while the Mini Disc plays over my computer speakers. Apparently there is "copyright protection" code that will not allow you to download the music onto the harddrive of your computer.

This is all Greek to an old school fart like me.

Is the software I'm looking for called a "ripper"? I have just completed downloading software called Cool Edit Pro that I saw on a home recording website that should allow me to do this. We are about to find out!

Any suggestions on how to rectify this dilemma? Whoever comes up with the solution will be treated to high praise and lots of alcohol!!!!

Sure, whatever software you are using to burn cds now should have a line-in recorder. That's how they tell you to record the music off old tapes and records to mp3.

I know you can use Roxio EZ Cd creator, but probably also Nero 6, Musicmatch Jukebox, and others. Just select line-in as source and set the appropriate recording level with your mixer software, press play on the mini disk and you should get the sound output while it records. Usually the playback and record levels on your software mixer are seperate and you can independantly control them.

Well I've got some more info. Found some software on the net last night (I was up until 2AM screwing around with this stuff) called Win NMD. Designed by some guy in Europe. It was designed specifically for Sony Net MD users experiencing the same thing I am. You have to run the serial cable but you also have to connect the Mini Disc player to your computer via USB. So I will run out during lunch today to Radio Shack to get a USB cable. Are there different sizes of USB connection or is it one size fits all?

Thanks. When I go buy the cable, I am going to bring the Mini Disc recorder with me. Maybe my eyes are getting old, but the one on the recorder looks smaller than the ones on the back of my PC. I think it might be proprietary on the recorder, but we will find out. Either way, I am slowly getting closer!!!!

And the sound quality of the recording on the Mini Disc recorder is absolutely fantastic!

It's the analog hole. DRM protection is a load of crap. All it does is make it harder for the honest consumer to enjoy their BOUGHT media. Any *real* pirate knows how to get around anything they try. If one can hear it, one can record it. </soapbox>

pasox2 is correct. Almost all sound cards have a line-in jack. Take the output stream from the minidisc player and plug it into the line-in jack. Either on the web or on the driver CD with your soundcard should be a utility to record the line-in to (usually) a .wav file. IIRC this is lossless super highquality recording. The .wav can then be burned to CD just like an MP3 (actually even easier, since the burner software does not have to decode the MP3 stream while burning).

    Hope this helps.

Thanks...see posts above. I found software on the net to do this. Since it is a Net MD recorder, I have to hook it up with two cables...one serial cable from the headphone jack on the recorder to the line-in jack on the sound card, and one USB cable from the USB port on the recorder to one of the USB ports on the back of my PC. But I'm getting closer! CLOSER!

USB cables are different on each end. The upstream end (what you would be hooking up to your USB device, is smaller in width but larger in depth than the downstream end, which would connect to your PC or USB hub.

In the picture below, the top pllug would go into your device, and the bottom one into your PC.

That's the difference between USB and USB 2.0, right?

I've used Sound Forge to record from a Sony mini-disk player ~ it works well.

There is no difference in cabling used for USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.... except if you use crappy cables that barely meet USB 1.1 specs.
