Anyone here own an Audi A6 or know anyone with an A6? I am going to go and test drive a 2002 A6 today, but I am a little worried about going forward with the purchase (provided I like it) because from what I have heard, Audis are reliability nightmares and expensive to fix.

This car is a lease return and only has 23,000 miles on it with an Audi Certified Warranty covering it for 2 years/100,000. However, the Certified Warranty excludes "wear and tear" and is nullified if you don't do "proper maintenance." I have to find out what "wear and tear" and "proper maintenance" in Audi lingo.

If you have any experiences, they would really help me out in making a decision.

I prefer the a4 and a8. Way sexier in both of their respective classes.

I think it was Businessweek or Newsweek that recently had an article on Audi and how their quality control was so screwed up as recently as 2-3 years ago that 50% of the cars they put out were considered "bad" in terms of failure rates. They went on to say the worst part was that the some of the failed components couldn't readily be replaced so owners were left without cars for weeks if not days, I believe. I'm not sure if that quality control issue affected the A6, but I wouldn't buy an Audi anything until I made sure what the reliability of the car has been as of late.

I do agree, but the A4 is too small for me and the A8 will require me to sell a kidney :)

Own a A4, and would buy it again, but not the A6, it's just not my type of car.

Yes, Audi is hella expensive to fix, and hella hard to find a quality shop that knows what they're doing, in fact, here, I can't hardly find a shop that's willing to do repair/maintenance for my Audi, and Audi requires premium for everything such as gas, filter, oil, and etc.....

But, again, I love this car. I LOVE IT, feels great, fun car, has more than you need for features, and very luxury, I love it.....

Oh yeah, test drive it first, and see for yourself, but beside and reliabilty and $$$, I'm 99% sure that that will like what you see, like what you drive, it's better than BMW in my opinion, because there're just so many BMW out on the road nowdays, it feels nothing special, and you will get more look back for an Audi than BMW.

There are so many quality problems with Audi - because they are basically just rebadged VW's.

I am pretty sure that only BMW covers wear and tear on their warranties so I would not worry too much about that.

Proof of maintenance means just keep the receipts of oil changes and regular maintenance and you will be fine.

I would recommend extending that warranty to however long you plan on keeping that car. As a VW owner, I can tell you this. VW is an awesome car, Audi is better but I would never drive these again unless I had a warranty on it for however long I owned it. It is not that much more relative to the price of the car and well worth it.

IMHO, if you are in a market for mid range luxury sedan, go for Lexus or Acura.

The new Acura TL or Acura RL are amazing. They have the looks, the ride, technology, and are very attractively priced. Acura dealership treatment is also very good from what I hear.

Test drive them before you go with the Audi. The first couple weeks will be nice in the Audi but then trouble will come looking for you....

I test drove the Audi today and loved it. However, thinking further down the road, I think I'll pass on it and I'll look for something Japanese instead (that's what I was looking for initially). I saw a nice 2001 Lexus GS430 and I might pursue that instead. I'm also considering the GS300 and the Toyota 4Runner as well. That just goes to show how indecisive I am :)

Thank you to everyone for your input. I greatly appreciate it.

hub.....Have you actually own one before you run you mouth? I guess not.

And Audi and VW is similar, but totally different in terms of price, quality, and feel....VW is like the walmart's clothes and Audi is like Gucci.

Unfortunately, you are wrong. Audi's share many parts with volkswagens which is why alot of the parts on the jetta have audi stickers on them. The main shared part is the engines. The 1.8 liter engine in the Jetta is the same one the put into the A4, Audi TT, Passat, and Golf. Same goes for the 2.8 liter engine. The only major difference is that Audis are actually assembled in Germany where many VW's are assembled in Mexico, but the problems with most VW and Audis are design problems which can't be blamed on the assembly.

I would not recommend any Audi, expecially a used one. It doesn't matter how long the warranty is if you have to put in the shop every six months.
