http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051025/SPORTS/510250348/1002 Tuberville speaks out against BCS system, ESPN I dislike Tubby, but I actually agree with him. Theres some truth behind his words and it's not just another bitter Auburn b**** and moan.
There needs to be a playoff but Tuberville is being a dick. It's going to be those two teams because those are the two best teams in the country. And how many national titles do you have Tommy? You have one year where you aren't mediocre and all of a sudden you think you can talk **** to someone who won more than you ever will?
And how are these scholarship athletes going to handle the extra games that com with a playoff? Reggie Bush is already having a tought time making it to his organic chemistry lab every week as it is. If you add another couple of games to make a playoff system there is no way serious STUDENT-athletes can effectively concentrate on getting their degrees in sports management, sports education, or general studies.
this is funny because didn't someone call ESPN out on their affiliation with the SEC last season and how it relates to the polls.
no doubt there needs to be a playoff, but it's OBVIOUS that texas and USC are the top 2 teams, and with the current system that's what's important.
i agree with you...they are the 2 best teams in the country. But that's only my opinion. In other sports, that opinion gets tested. Because the best teams are forced to play one another and actually decide it on the field. In football, if you're ranked high early on it's a huge advantage....whether you can actually beat Team X or not. i'm saying all this as a Longhorn fan, as well. the system blows.
I agree 100% with that. What I probably should've said, "It will be those two teams because those are the two teams people think are best - not because ESPN is hyping Matt Leinart, Vince Young and Reggie Bush". I agree that CFB needs to move to a playoff - but I completely disagree with his rants on ESPN and Lou Holtz.
the whole extra game argument is bull**** to begin with. The college presidents added an extra regular season game this year which they thought would promote more competition. Eliminate the new game they just added and make a final bcs game, creating a 4 team playoff in two of the other BCS games.
He has a point that the system sucks, but his crap about OU/USC last year is just a bunch of BS. People were moving votes from OU to Auburn throughout the year, and midseason, Auburn was the bandwagon team to believe in when OU was struggling a bit. The last three weeks (the SEC/B12 championship week, in particular), when the teams had a chance to make a final statement, Auburn sucked. In the SEC championship, they squeaked by a struggling Tennessee team starting it's 3rd string QB. OU, in their last three games, allowed a total of 6 points and absolutely dominated in every aspect. Auburn lost the votes, and thus the end of that. It was, to an extent, decided on the field - if Auburn had impressed the way OU did, they would have been in the title game.
Like I always say this time of year, Division I-AA has a 16 team playoff and we crown our national champion ON the field before the I-A bowl season even starts. The argument that there would be too many games is silly considering that if your team makes a bowl, you're going to practice every day until your bowl game and practices take more time away from school than games. It's all about money and nothing else. Money is the reason there will NEVER be a playoff.
I really wonder why, when the NCAA people say "extra games would take too much of our athlete's time", some interviewer doesn't ask "why don't you care about your division II athlete's time?"
Why did he pick on Holtz in particular? There are many has been coaches at ESPN if Holtz can even be considered a has been.
I have never been a big fan of Tuberville, but I see where he is coming from on this. I, like about every other college football fan, want a playoff and feel that the BCS system really, really, really sucks. He probably shouldn't have said what he did about Lou Holtz, but considering that I really don't care for Holtz, I thought that was funny. I do believe that USC and Texas are the 2 best teams, but you have to realize that Tuberville coaches in a conference that is normally considered to be one of the best conferences in college football. He has the mindset that if the champion of one of the best conferences (maybe the best according to him) is 12-0, then they should be playing for the NC. But the point is there is always going to be someone left out AS LONG AS we have the BCS. And sadly, it doesn't look like the BCS is going anywhere anytime soon.
VT might have something to say about that, although I wouldn't agree with them, of course unless one of them lose.
