I will soon be able to upgrade my existing phone (Blackberry) through my carrier AT&T. I have heard that there are phone with better features than iPhone has but it still dominates the smartphone market because of the name and the number of apps available on it.

While the apps are appealing, everybody and their freaking mother has an iPhone nowadays and I can use one of theirs if I want the iPhone experience. So, I am looking for some good alternatives but am not sure what to look for. I figure their are others on this site who have different types of smartphones and wouldn't mind sharing their views.

    Any suggestions?

AT&T's android selection sucks maybe sometime in the future. The iphone is probably the best phone on AT&T as of right now and the new one is just coming out!

You can't get the iPhone experience just by using someone else's phone, but I digress.

IMO the 1st thing you should consider is what platform you want to use: Blackberry, Android, Windows, or iPhone OS

From there, you choose the handset.

Ugh, looks like iPhone 4 is the way to go from the early comments :(

How much is it going to retail for?

Dude, if your on ATT, just get the iphone. I don't get why it matters that everyone has it? I understand it may be the cool thing to go against whats popular but come on man. You're denying yourself a great phone, all because everyone has one. Think about that.

    This.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the iPhone, AT&T would have either folded up their wireless division or would had sold it to someone else by now. Their service in Houston has been ho-hum and their pricing plans aren't competitive.

If you're not getting the iPhone, there are a plethora of better services/phones/plans out there IMO...unless you're getting a KILLER discount through your work.

Don't buy into the Apple hype. Don't buy into the Apple hate either.

I'd say the obvious choices right now are:

    ATT - iPhone 4
    Verizon - Droid Incredible
    Sprint - EVO
Tmobile - I have no idea

At this rate, this list will change every 2 months.

Like others said, if you stay with ATT, get the iphone. If you decide to switch, look into Tmobile and the Nexus, especially with the new Android Froyo coming out. Tmobile is quite a bit cheaper than ATT also.

It's not only that but I have been told there are phones with better features than the iPhone out there.

Also, T-Mobile is not a carrier in my area. We have AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

IMO this is where you fail to actually find a phone that's right FOR YOU. I can praise the Iphone to almost no end while Cowboy BeBop and others on here can burn it at the stake just as easily. It just depends on your personal preference. I haven't used an Android-based phone but I'm not going to criticize it. I've used a BB for a year and it was a very enjoyable experience (in terms of having a phone for business use, I'd take a BB over an iphone any day).

Find out what you really want out of your phone and that should make your decision easier.

If you're on AT&T, just get an iPhone 4.

If you're really, really, REALLY against the iPhone since it's so popular, try a Nexus One compatible with AT&T: http://www.google.com/phone. You won't get it subsidized though, so be prepared to shell out $529 (but without a contract).

For T-Mobile, just get an iPhone and jailbreak/unlock it.

I've had a BB for a while now and I do enjoy it but I am looking for something that is touch screen and can work on Wi-Fi and has camera/video capabilities and apps as well.

I haven't had any Droid experience. But I can tell you that I have had extensive BB, Palm and Windows Mobile experience and the iPhone trumps them all in Smartphone terms. And as others have said, a jailbroken iPhone is a thing of beauty.

There are, like android phones for example. But on Att, nothing beats the iphone. Leave att if you want a good phone that is not the iphone.
