I received a coupon via email and regular mail to get a 3G Microcell from AT&T for free. I've read what it does online and through the brochure but has anybody else received this offer? Has anybody else used this device? If so, how do you like it and what do you think?
Do you get horrible AT&t reception? I believe all it does is use your existing broadband connection to get a better signal on your phone. Verizon, and Sprint also offer similar devices
My brother in law has one of them because he can't get any reception at his apartment. It gives you 5 bars automatically when you are around it. The good things is that basically through your online account you setup which phone numbers you want to be able and connect to the Micro cell. I believe you can only have 5 phones that connect to it at any one time and this also makes it impossible for random people to just connect to it.
We live in a rural area. Often our phones (iPhone 4s) say searching for service and we never get more than 3 bars and that's a rarity, 1 or searching is the norm. Questions I have: 1. So we could cancel our home phone account with this device, right? The only reason we have one is because the signal strength is horrible. 2. Would it still allow us to use our wireless Internet and not force us to use 3G? 3. I didn't see any monthly fees listed, so is it a device you pay for and UAE as you please? Thanks for the feedback.
1. Yes, you wouldn't need home phone service because the Micro Cell will basically give you full strength by using your wifi. 2. You can still use your wireless internet while on the micro cell. I have all the time. Basically what you will see is your phone still on wifi and instead of ATT on the signal bars you will see "MicroCell" I believe meaning it's connected. 3. I think it's a one time charge. Also if you call customer service sometimes you can get a discount on it if you complain enough and say you can't get any service and you are wanting to swtich etc...He did that and they gave him a better deal on the micro cell.
Well I received a coupon for a free one so I am going to use that. Thanks again for your response, it is appreciated.
There were reports of this online earlier in the week as something AT&T just started offering to certain data plan customers (both iPhone and other device owners) to counter all the flak they've been getting on poor signal reception and potential customer loss to VZW. Things to note: 1) There is no service charge for the microcell because it's using your personal Internet service to generate an AT&T 3G signal (voice+data). If your Internet flakes out, the microcell won't work. 2) By accepting this free microcell offer, you're agreeing to stay with AT&T for an additional 12 months (doesn't affect your phone upgrade cycle). If you opt to leave AT&T within that time period, you'll have to return the device or pay a pro-rated amount to keep. If you stay for the 12 months, the microcell is yours for life. Beyond those minor issues, this looks to be a great offer.
Well my contract with AT&T runs another 2 years so I might as well do this, I think. It'll save me about $50/month just by getting my landline disconnected.
We have a MicroCell for the house because we get a crap signal when inside. It works really well for us.
