http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/ncaa/03/16/bc.fbc.a.mplayers.arres.ap/index.html Hope it was the alcohol talking. I don't know how you can be a racist while playing sports, but I'm sure there are some out there. Are there any minority ATM students here? Do you guys feel comfortable on campus? Excuse me if this has been posted.
So now the actions of 2 drunk football players sets the tone for the 40,000 students on campus and whether certain people should feel comfotable there? Please. We all know that if these players had been at any other school, this would be dismissed as two drunk jackasses. Since it is at A&M, you have chosen to hop back up on your tired soapbox. We all also know there there have never been any racial epithets shouted in Austin, right? The fact of the matter is this. Coach Fran has already kicked 3 guys off the team due to transgressions with legal implications. He also stated today that these two players will face "stern consequences." Translated, there is a good liklihood that these fellas are packing their bags at this very moment.
When did I say that Hang and Smith represented the tone for 40K students? Do minority students feel comfortable there? ATM is what, 85% white? Seems like a pretty homogenous student body. I think it would be almost natural to feel a little uncomfortable. Anyways, I apologize.
That makes a total of 9 A&M players that have gotten arrested since last September. They need to do a better job of covering stuff up down there. Texas A&M does have a very homogenous student body, composed mostly of conservative whites. It has more than its share of East Texas, 1982 F-150 drivin, Confederate flag sportin, tobaccer chewin rednecks. That being said, A&M sometimes does get a bad rap. I have lots of normal friends who went to school there either because they couldn't get into The University, or because their parents went to school there. When I was in school I used to go down there about 2 to 3 times a year, and I have never witnessed any of this apparent racism. I'm usually met with a random "howdy!" when I walk past someone. Hell, we even tailgated with a bunch of random Aggies before last year's 46-15 beating at Kyle. My strangest A&M story happened my junior year in college. We went down to College Station one night for a party. It was your pretty standard, run of the mill apartment party, but I notice a few things are kinda funny. There's one goofy bubba wearing a t-shirt with sleeves cut, tribal tattoos on his arms, thick glasses, Skoal in back pocket, and an Earnhardt 3 cap. It turns out that he was there with his girlfriend, an Asian engineering chick! But it gets weirder...Bubba's friend was there with an Arab chick wearing a hijab, the traditional Muslim head covering. And get this...the Arab chick is drinking beer from the keg like a ******* fish! Anyways, so one of my friends, also of Bangladeshi descent, is on the balcony having a smoke and starts talking to this slut. A little later, the slut later asks him to go into the bathroom with her! Nothing materializes, however, because my friend was there with his girlfriend. So a few beers later, I say "what the hell" and start talking to this w****. Thirty minutes later, we're in her apt, a few doors down, messing around on her bed. Meanwhile we're chatting about random bull****, and she starts talking about all the drugs she used to do, and how a bunch of her friends have OD'd and died, etc. Unfortunately, this happens right before I'm about to hit it, so instead I make up some excuse about having to go back to Austin, and get the f*ck out.
Welcome to the world of CU football. A few jackasses make the rest of us look bad. If you're gonna judge us, get ready to have it thrown back in your face.
I'm a minority Texas A&M grad student (I'm of Taiwanese heritage). I lived with my white girlfriend for a year. We never experienced anything negative when we kissed or embraced in public. We never thought anything about it, even on game day when all the old aggies came flooding in for the football games. There are four professors here in my building who are involved in interracial relationships. In my lab there are three students dating outside their race. I'm not going to say it's as diverse here as UT - it's not. It's not a cesspool of racism either, but I understand it's hard to change historical perception. The only reason I ever think about race here is when someone else brings it up. Honestly, when I moved here I expected some racial tension. I'd heard the stories about A&M. But it's been a complete non-issue, at least for me.
Just for reference. Just based on purely demographics, none of the big 3 public Universities in Texas have particularly diverse demographics. UT has a strong Asian percentage, but all fall very flat when it comes to attracting African Americans. It depends on what racial standpoint you look at. Texas A&M demographics: Enrollment: 35,924 Female: 49% Out of State: 3% International: 1% African American: 2% Asian: 3% Caucasian: 82% Hispanic: 9% UT: Enrollment: 37,480 Female: 51% Out of State: 5% International: 3% African American: 4% Asian: 17% Caucasian: 61% Hispanic: 14% Texas Tech: Enrollment: 23,595 Female: 45% Out of State: 5% International: 1% African American: 3% Asian: 2% Caucasian: 82% Hispanic: 11% Native American: 1
I was at A&M in the Fall of 1972. My 7 suitemates included 1 Asian-American, 3 Mexican-Americans, 1 African-American, and 2 other Anglo-Americans. Enough said.
Well you see the difference is that at CU it is pretty much school sponsored that crap and the administration just turned their head. I mean what the coach said about that female player was rediculous. As a former Aggie I hope coach Fran takes the same stance with these players as he did with the previous ones that have been arrested and kick them off the team. If he doesn't, then you are right. We are no better than CU.
If you feeling like a pimp brotha, go on, brush your shoulders off Coaches is pimps too, go on, brush your shoulders off Eustachy is crazy baby, don't forget that chancellor told you, get that college chick off your shoulders
Supermac touched on it already, but I was going to note that it does seem odd the continued focus on A&M's lack of diversity and little attention paid to the lack of diversity at a University like Texas Tech. Not only is Tech very predominately white, the city of Lubbock has a relatively small minority population, as does the rest of the Panhandle and South Plains. And there are plenty of rednecks up there, as well. Of course, Texas Tech is a far better school than A&M, but that's a different issue.
