What is there to snack on for Atkins diet? Ever since I started working, I've been starving by the end of the work day, and I usually don't have dinner til around 8. I want to know if there is something to snack on during the day that is pre-packaged or requires very little preparation.

Do not tell me power bars because I detest those things, and they are way too expensive. Anyway, please let me know... thanks!

    No,

Cheese is all protein, and your body does not turn protein into fat....in fact it can't even turn FAT into fat.

It turns processed sugars, alcohol and carbohydrates into fat.

    Cheese is good !!!

I actually eat fruit everyday. However I can't afford to eat too much because fruits are generally pretty high in sugar. Also, I find myself feeling more hungry after eating an apple or orange. It just isn't very filling for me.

Yeah, I really don't want to spend all that money for the bars... I think I'd rather starve than to dump my money like that.

Get Allouete flavored cheese spread and put it on some celery. Get pepperoni sticks or pork rinds. Its Atkins, baby, so you don't have to sweat the fat content (no pun intended). Go to Walmart for the Atkins or Carb Solutions bars. These are good because they also serve as vitamin supplements. They taste ok, but they serve the diet well by making up for some nutrients that are missing in the diet. Peanuts and Macadamias are also good snacks.

What about cholesterol content? Maybe I need to read up on this stuff... I know squat about it.

I should as well. I know some of the facts without any of the reasons or explanations. I do know that there are claims that cholesterol levels actually improve for people who are on this diet.

beef jerky and cheese. Vegetables and grapefruits are good also. They have very low glycmic (sp?) indexes which is what you should worry about.

Good call on the beef jerky. Pepperoni sticks are cool as well. Don't forget the Pork Rinds.

I have been at my goal weight for the last month or so.....I have even been to England had beer, ate ice cream, bread..etc..etc..etc...and have not gained a pound.

I may try to lose another 10 pounds just to see what I look like, but I feel pretty good right now.

What Atkins has done is educate me on how my body works and what it turns into fat, and what it turns into energy etc.

I would recommend Atkins to anyone....unabashedly.

I'm no expert on fat and protien, but I'm pretty sure that the companies that make cheese say there is fat in it. It doesn't really matter on the Atkins anyway. All you need to count to lose the fat is the carbs. Stay under 20 and your gold.

For snacks I generally ate celery or cucumbers that I would cut up the night before.

Ummm, sorry, but I have to give the official biochemical answer to this. You CAN turn protein into fat, and you can certainly turn fat into fat, as well as carbohydrates. These are the three types of metabolites used by the body. Here's what happens when they enter your system:

-Carbohydrates: first few are used for blood sugar and immediate needs. The next are stored in the liver, as glycogen, to be used for needs in the near future. You can't store more than a certain amount. After that, it gets broken down into little two-carbon units. These are used for energy if the body needs it right then. If not, the body strings them back together - as fat molecules - and stores them as triglycerides. This is why overeating on carbs can make you gain weight.

-Fats: can be broken down if you need them. Otherwise, they are packed into triglycerides and stored, right where you don't want them. If they are broken down, you also get these little two-carbon units. These are either used for energy, or - if you don't need the energy - strung back together and stored as fat.

-Proteins: are broken down into their component parts, "amino acids". These are used for the body's needs - to build muscle, enzymes, and the like. Your body is usually glad to have it. However, beyond a certain amount, the amino acids are broken down. The nitrogens are removed (excreted as urea, which is just where you'd think it is), and you're left with... little two-carbon units. If these aren't needed for energy, they are strung back together into fat molecules.

So: eating a lot of fats and proteins and fewer carbs may work, because it's easier to overeat on carbs (also, they produce more water when metabolized, which makes you bulkier, though it doesn't hurt anything). Extreme low-carb diets will utilize an alternative metabolic pathway, which can lower blood pH and all sorts of other dangerous consequences. Because fats are more calorie-dense than other metabolites, I recommend a low-fat diet with lots of protein, decent amounts of carbs, and plenty of exercise. I cannot stress the exercise enough. But your mileage may vary.

As for <b>cheese</b> - yes, it contains fat. Depends on the type. String cheese only has 80 calories per string, 50 of which are from fat... I know, that's more than 30%, but the total number of calories is not high at all. I recommend these for snacks. Dairy products also seem to help a lot of people lose weight, especially the low-fat ones. ("milk solids" are great!)
