Just for a moment pretend that you can imagine yourself as as a key advisor to Morey, JVG and CD and that you had the ear of Les Alexander. It's Draft time and you are in the War Games Room in the Toyota Center and the seventh pick has just been taken, all eyes are focused upon you, and questions are coming at you every second..... Still available are Adam Morrison, Sheldon Williams , JJ Redick , Brewer,Carney and Marcus Vincius Vieria De. Computer like analysis is required of you to refresh the minds of the big guns.. Who is the best athlete? Who has the best leap? Who is most ready to contribute? Who is the best defender? Who will fit our needs ? Who is likely to be injury free? Who should we take and why. What would you say and why would you recommend that player?
Would take Morrison. Morrison may not be the total package, but he is easily the best player left in that group. It would require moviing TMac back to the two, but big deal, while ideally you want him at the 3, you can make an exception if you get a big time player at sf that can reduce TMac's load on O so that he can concentrate more on d. You could also play small ball with Morrison at the 4 and Tmac at the 3 to create mismatches. Morrison probably wont ever be a great or even good defender, but he certainly has the tools to be good enough. But I really think it would be a huge stretch to see him fall out of the top 5 unless the diabetes scares them off.
Morrison is the best available, but unless he or McGrady can play PF our perimeter defense will be even SLOWER than last season. Not so sure how they would fit together on the offensive end either. Best fit would be Ronnie Brewer, in my opinion. The shooting is suspect, but that can be developed. His versatility offensively and defensively (he could probably play and guard three positions) are difficult to pass up. Redick would be a great addition, as a bench player. His acquisition would not address our size and quickness issue in the backcourt. But his shooting, no doubt, is sorely needed. The player I'd most like for us to get is Brewer. It might be smarter to take Morrison, though, and maybe trade him for a couple players or just see how the McGrady-Morrison combination pans out.
Absolutely no hesitation Morrison. This guy should be a number 1 pick if it just came to NBA readiness and immediate impact. I would first trade down our pick and get Shelden williams- because he will be available. The hope is to get an extra late First Round pick. With that I will go for a shooter ( not necessarily named Redick- but would not have a problem) who can defend- not sure who will be there but Brewer or Mady Collins. I will fill the starting SG position via Free Agency. Sign A back up PG ( Jay Williams- if he is healthy I would give him a 3 year deal using our TE ( with team options to protect ourselves if things did not work out)- See I told you I am not a Duke Hater!
Trade him to New Orleans for their 12, 15, and Kirk Snyder. For Morrison to be available, it means Portland had to have taken Roy after he fell to #4, and one team reached for a player, in all likelihood Boston at #7 reached for O'Bryant. Can't see Portland passing on him. I think he is #1 and Roy is #2 on their board. That's the way I would look at it.
Echoing what everyone has already said: Morrison. I have a hard time imagining the Bobcats passing on him though.
I would laugh at the idiots that let Morrison fall all the way to #8 and tell TMac he is moving back to the 2.
What I would imagine that GMs do during these crucial moments in the draft is create their own list of the their top 13 picks from top to bottom prior to draft day based on workouts/scouting and such. When the clock starts for our pick to be made we pretty much pick the highest player on the list not already taken. It's hard to imagine GMs making such last second decisions that could determine the history of the franchise. However, more of that time is probably used trying to see if they can pull off a last second unexpected deal that is highly favorable to them. I can imagine such a scenario if Morrison were still on the board at #8.
Nice thread Yetti, except you should have excluded Morrison. He makes the choice too obvious and there is no way he is available at #8. Excluding Morrison, my choice would be either Brewer or Carney. I'm leaning Carney right now.
What does Carney give you that Brewer won't? Seems to me Brewer is overall a better player. Admittedly, I didn't watch either play very much in college.
If Tracy was given the choice between: 1. Staying at SF. 2. Getting better players on the floor, but moving to SG. He would probably pick the latter. Morrison > All our SGs this past season and probably anyone that we can pick up through free agency.
Several MOCK DRAFT PREDICTIONS suggest Morrison falling to the 8th position, that is why I included him.
I can't see it happening. But it would be funny to watch Van Gundy coach a team like that. He'd be pulling his 3 hairs out and cussing a blue streak because of the lack of defense as we are winning games by putting up 115 points a night and giving up 110.
Tom Penders (UH) has had a chance to see quite a lot of Carney up close. He seems VERY high on him, thinks he's a great kid and seems to have no qualms about his motivation. Brewer's shot is to me more of a concern than Carney's motor.
