Season Final: Astros vs Brewers 9/25-9/28 Pitching Probables 9/25 Redding vs Davis ***7:05pm FSSW 9/26 Robertson vs Franklin ***7:05pm FSSW 9/27 Villone vs Obermueller ***12:25pm FOX 9/28 TBA vs TBA ***1:05pm FSSW / ESPN2 Well, the final series of the regular season is upon us. What will the Astros do? Will they sweep the Brewers like they need to? Will the cubs lose a game? All we can do is hope is, YES to both of those questions. The Astros just ended a 4 game skid, and the Cubs have won 4 in a row, including 2 shutouts. Ofcourse the Astros are playing a lot harder teams than the creampuffs the Cubs are playing. BUT, a win is a win. The central division is going down to the wire. I really hope the Astros can pull the necesary wins to be in first. Astros are tied in 2nd in the Wild Card Race, though the Marlins only need one more win to secure the WC. Predictions? Well...ofcourse exactly what we need: WWWW!!!!!
I believe Sunday's game is Miller vs. Sheets... what a matchup that will be if the playoffs come down to that last day. Hey... the Astros SHOULD win out to end the season. If that happens, and the Cubs are in the playoffs, then that means THEY WON OUT. Then, you (dreaded cliche) "tip your hat" to them, cause they took care of business. If you want to point to something, point to that last series at Wrigley where the Stros won the first game, beating Kerry Wood with Wade Miller's gem, but lost the next three in convincing fashion... that gave the Cubs the season series, and represents the differential between the two right now.
don't we have to win out and the cubs lose 2? the cubs are one up and hold the tiebreaker, thus we have to catch up two games. i'm thinking it won't happen. i rooted for the cubs over the cardinals in that big 5 game series b/c i figured the cubs are the cubs and they would collapse, but alas they are going strong and still have prior and wood going one more time. here's to WWWW and a few cubs losses. i'll even root against my fantasy team and hope prior loses. wouldn't you know the one guy on my team who's been great all season has been a cub.
If the Astros win their last 4 and the Cubs go 3-1 their will be a 1 game playoff. Remember the Cubs are only up 1 game. If it goes to a playoff it's in Wrigley.
The only way a tiebreaker comes into effect is if the Cubs and 'Stros tie for the division and the Wild Card. If it comes down to one being in the playoffs and one not, then one game will be played.
At this point, I'd take a one-game playoff at Wrigley with: Oswalt vs. S. ESTES!!! Check out the other thread in this forum about how Dusty has botched his pitching rotation for the rest of the year....
I'm not gonna say the Astros are gonna lose, but they are choke artists. Choke-a-holics. Masters of the choking arts. They are a bunch of chokers! Damn them for teasing us and imploding now. WIN, Astros, WIN!
Nick, I seriously doubt Dusty would trot Estes out for a one-game playoff. If he does the Cub fans will be calling for his head. I'd say Zambrano on short rest is more likely, especially considering his success against the Astros this year.
I wish Oswalt would pitch game 4... They first three pitchers need to step it up, and that goes for the bats too... I think the Cubs will lose 1, maybe two of there remaining games...
I really hope the astros can pull this one off. Sweep in the series, or hope the Reds can win a freaken game against the cubbies!!!!
I think you mean "Pirates can win a freaking game against the cubbies!!!" . Thank God it's not the Reds we have to rely on. They couldn't win a high school game with their depleted roster as they have shown.
FLASHBACK: 6 Years ago today September 25 1997 - Astros clinch their first N.L. Central title with a 9-1 triumph over the Cubs. Brad Ausmus opens up a tight 2-1 duel with a three-run bomb off Jeremi Gonzalez in the seventh that starts a six-run uprising. Mike Hampton allows just four hits for his 15th win. 7 Years ago today September 25 1996 - Mike Simms drives in the winning run with a single in the tenth to upend the Mets, 5-4. John Hudek gets the win. The victory snaps a nine-game losing skid that pushes Houston out of the N.L. Central race.
Oh yeah, and this FLASHBACK: September 25 1986 - In the signature game in franchise history, Mike Scott no-hits the Giants as the Astros clinch the N.L. West crown. Scott fans 13 in the 2-0 victory. The win cements Scott's hold on the only Cy Young Award in team annals. Denny Walling breaks the scoreless game with a solo homer off Juan Berenguer in the fifth.
I was there! Ran onto the field and slid into second base after the game (in my drunken stuper). That was the game on the live episode of ER, right?
you people are too pessimistic. if we win today, and the cubs lose, were tied for first. then, we'll have an easier 3 games(hopefully) since the pirates are better than the brew crew.
