Why are there 6 teams in our division, 4 in the AL east, and 5 everywhere else??? Time for a change? Or not?
Because most of the schedule has teams playing in their own league and because teams play series instead of individual games, you can't have an odd number of teams in either league. For example, lets say that you make the NL and AL each have 15 teams. Well, then you'd only be able to have 7 series going on (14 teams) and one team would always be sitting at home for 3 days with no games. And the season is already too long. The World Series starts too late. Giving random teams 3 days off throughout the season would probably lengthen the schedule by a few weeks so that's not an option. This could be solved if you always had 1 interleague series going on, but the MLB likes the way they do it now and aren't going to change. So, with 30 teams, there needs to be 16 teams in one league and 14 in the other. The only hope for evening out the leagues is expansion (yeah right, like baseball needs that) or contraction. Of course, if you dropped 2 teams and had 14 in each league, how would you split the divisions? PS - the AL East has 5 teams. It's the AL West that has 4.
I'm more concerned about the AL having 14 teams and the NL having 16. They did this because they didn’t want interleague thought the season. Honestly I think baseball should have the 15-15 leagues and everyone plays everyone. There is way too many division games in baseball and it’s almost impossible to make the playoffs unless you either win your division on you are in a weak division so you get a wild card spot.
The most logical way to clear this up is to split 15/15, and allow at least one interleague series go on at any time. I don't see why not. The whole interleague hoopla died a long time ago. Nobody really cares when they're held these days.
The problem is baseball is stuck under the influence of tradition so they want to limit the interleague play. I truly agree with you but the old foogies won't change it. I think its also stupid that they do the wholerival games especially then there is 2 NL teams left out.
I think you meant to say the AL WEST. That is the division with only 4 teams. My answer would be no, because I hate west coast start times for us central time zone people...
Honestly, that's what I LIKE about baseball. If you're going to have divisions, you might as well determine who wins the division (and thus makes the playoffs) mostly on games played against each other. I HATE that the NBA gives division championships extra meaning, when in fact, divisions in the NBA mean nothing (Rockets played the Lakers during the regular season as many times as they played the Spurs). The NBA should abandon all divisions and make it strictly conference-based seedings. The fact that more than half the teams make the playoffs anyways indicates that they shouldn't screw up the seeding once the season is over and done with. It IS hard to make the playoffs in baseball... as it should be. The regular season is a 162 game marathon... which takes into account all the ebs and flows, slumps, hot streaks, injuries, phenoms, etc. that can change a season. All of that evens out. Now, you could say its silly to determiine a MLB champion with a tiny piddly 7 game playoff series, after the 162 game marathon, but most of the reward is simply getting a chance to play in the playoffs (and thus take part in the small sample size). That's why you have champagne after clinching division titles in baseball, as well as after clinching first round playoff series. It IS a big deal to advance to the next round.... always.
They should realign both West Divisions. Currently: AL West: Texas, Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles NL West: Colorado, Arizona, LA, SF, SD The issue is that there are two LA teams. You cant have the Angels and the Dodgers in the same division, so you have to split em up. NL West: Los Angeles, San Fran, San Diego, Oakland, Seattle AL West: Texas (Dallas), Houston, Colorado, Arizona, and unfortunately LA Angels. Timezone wise, the AL West would have two CST, two MST, and one PST. The NL west would all be PST. Travelwise, LA to Houston is only 200 miles more than Pittsburgh. Yeah there's a little pain on the late games with LA, but better Of course this will never happen.
1. There aren't 4 teams in the NL East. Tampa-Boston-NYY-Baltimore-Toronto makes 5. 2. There are 4 teams in the AL West, but moving a team that plays home games in the central time zone to a division where it's rivals play 2 hours off would suck. Ask Rangers fans (if you can find one) about following them on TV during road games with 9p.m. start times all season long. All things being equal, no thanks. 3. Interleague sucks. I don't care about watching the Brewers play the Twins...or the Cubs play the Angels. 4. Baseball plays 162 games and an unbalanced schedule within each division for the purpose of picking out the best team from each division. By the end of 162 games, you've got your division champs and a wild card team. If your'e going to do anything at all, get rid of the wild card. Premiums on playoff spots are nice. They make for meaningful pennant chases down the stretch of the season instead of watching mediocre teams qualify. In all honesty, the inverse is my least favorite thing about the NBA -- that they let more teams in the playoffs than they exclude. That diminishes the value of regular season games.
I change my vote to leave it as is. I voted move another team, but didn't realize each league needs an even number of teams. I also didn't realize there is no good fit to move to the AL West.
Move to the junior circuit??? What in the hell is wrong with you people??? Eeyyyyyeeeeeaaaaagggch. Abolish the "dh", and it *might* be tolerable. But, not really. I want to play the Dodgers and Braves more, not less. I have an idea for a realignment: <table border=1><tr><td bgcolor="black">NL West</td><td bgcolor="black">NL East</td><td bgcolor="black">AL West</td><td bgcolor="black">AL East</td></tr><tr><td>Astros</td><td>Cardinals</td><td>Angels</td><td>Blue Jays</td></tr><tr><td>Braves</td><td>Expos</td><td>A’s</td><td>Red Sox</td></tr><tr><td>Dodgers</td><td>Cubs</td><td>Mariners</td><td>Orioles</td></tr><tr><td>Giants</td><td>Mets</td><td>Rangers</td><td>Yankees</td></tr><tr><td>Padres</td><td>Pirates</td><td>Twins</td><td> Brewers </td></tr><tr><td>Reds</td><td>Phillies</td><td>Royals</td><td>Tigers</td></tr><tr><td> </td><td> </td><td>White Sox</td><td>Indians</td></tr></table> ...screw the dbacks, rays, fish, and rockies.
It's sad that those new teams have a combined 3 WS titles and 5 WS appearances between them, with all 4 making it to the WS this decade.
I saw this thread and was like "is the OP mad, you want the Astros to move in with the Yankees and Red Sox?"
I think baseball could use a realignment personally, but not the way the OP proposed. I do think it would be cool to have the Rangers and the Stros in the same division.
IF it actually was the AL East that only had 4 teams, don't you think they'd move Pittsburgh there first? Why move a Central time zone team when you've got one in the east already? That said, I think the alignment is about as good as it's going to get. It definitely sucks for all 3 Rangers fans that a majority of their road games don't start until 9 pm. Who else would you move to that division to rectify it?
better than lousy games with Pirates, Reds, or Brewers. I'd miss St Louis and the Cubs but love games vs Dallas, Colorado, and AZ.
