houston.astros.mlb.com/NA...p&c_id=hou HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that the club has re-signed free-agent outfielder Orlando Palmeiro to a two-year, $1.9-million contract plus award bonuses. The announcement was made by General Manager Tim Purpura. Palmeiro, 36, appeared in 114 games last season and hit .284 (58x204) with a career-high tying three home runs and 20 RBI in his second consecutive season with the Astros. He hit .288 (15x52) as a pinch-hitter in 2005, including a franchise-record seven pinch-hit doubles. A veteran of 11 big league seasons, Palmeiro has played for the Angels (1995-2002), St. Louis Cardinals (2003), and the Astros (2004-05). He has hit .277 with 12 home runs and 203 RBI in 1,002 career Major League games. Palmeiro's 85 career pinch-hits ranks fourth among active players. This guy is too old to be getting a two year deal.
It's good to keep him. Viz was a real disappointment for the most part last season while Orlando stepped it up for the most part. I think we kept the right guy out of those two. We like Orlando!
Good re-signing, even though it's not much. Palmeiro is mostly a pinch-hitter anyway, so age doesn't really matter. Plus, he flat out knows how to make contact at the plate, and can surprise you with some power every now and then. I'd go so far as to say that last year if we had a tying run on third and needed a sac fly or some kind of contact, I'd put Palmeiro at the plate.
i like the resigning, he's a good backup who gets a lot of pinch hits....but yeah, i wouldn't be surprised if this is the BIG DEAL the stros have been working on....
