What do you guys think about a trade for Scott Rolen. Rolen wants out of Philly and the fans there want him out too. He would be a great addition to our team. Our offense has been stagnant this year and he could definitely give us a boost. Maybe we could trade some prospects to get this guy. What do you think?
i thought about this the other day. i dont know what it would take to land him. do you know what his contract is/how long. i dont see why the astros would make a trade for him in a year that it doesnt look like we will be contending and then lose him the following year when his contract runs out, even though i still hope we go on a monster run.
if i were hunsicker and mclane, i wouldn't add any payroll at all until i know if there's going to be a work stoppage.....everything could be drastically different at the end of that strike.
No way!!! Rolen is in the final year of his contract. He wants mega-$$$, which is why the Phillies are trying to trade him (they can't afford him) There are only a handful of teams that can (or will) pay $100+ million for any player, much less Scott Rolen. The Astros are not one of these teams.
We need to find a starting third baseman for next year. Rolen is good, but he's expensive and he isn't even doing well at the plate this year. One thing he can definately do is play gold glove defense, but it's not worth what he wants. It's a shame we have such a "poor" owner because with our "salary cap," we'll never win a world series. We have to develope someone in the minors because there aren't a whole bunch of good starting 3rd basemen out there. It would be nice if they gave Jason Lane more chances in the majors. He's getting old, pretty soon he'll become a minor league legend. It's gotten to the point where I don't think this team is going anywhere with Biggio and Bagwell.
I wouldn't trade for rent-a-player until we know if this team can get back into it. We've gone from 10 back to 6 1/2 in a week. If we can get to 4-5 by the break (another week), then maybe management looks at some trades closer to the deadline. Preferably, though, trades for players who are under contract for a couple of years.
What happened tonight? I see he only pitched 1.1 (very inneffective) innings. Was it injury (the sore shoulder) or just a mighty quick hook by Jimy?
No quick hook...the bases were loaded (I believe) when they pulled him out after having given up 3 runs. Send him to the minors.
Actually, the Phillies can afford him, but Rolen turned down their big offer because he didn't feel the organization had a commitment to winning. Since then, the Phillies management and Local press has engaged in trashing Mr. Rolen quite vociferously, and it has affected his play on the field - and he won't recover till he's out of Philly. If the Astros would be willing to make a big money, long-term commitment to him - we should make a deal for him.
How about the DL? He's been complaining of a sore shoulder for a week or so; hopefully his upcoming MRI doesn't reveal anything that rest won't cure...sit him out the remainder of the season if that's what it takes.

No, I really don't think that. I may not know much about baseball, but I do know not to trade him. Mere frustration.
Send Saarlooser down and bring up Rosario. Seriously, Saarloos doesn't have a quick enough fastball, or good enough offspeed stuff to make it in the majors.
We should have traded Saarloos when we had the chance. Based on his minor league numbers, teams would have given up a lot to get him. Now, after his tiny stint in the majors, its obvious he is no where near to being ready. Thats a shame.

He played college baseball in 2001. He was nowhere near ready and everyone in the Astros organization knew that. The idea was that his numbers were so ridiculous that maybe he'd prove them wrong, so they gave him a shot. Nothing to lose there, really. Most pitchers don't get to the big leagues for 3-4 years. He made it in under a year. Mark Prior was the same way, but he was considered the most advanced college pitcher *ever* by many scouts. I think it's a bit early to give up on him in the long-run. Plenty of junkballers can be successful in MLB -- especially when mixed with a staff of power pitchers. The player he is often compared to is Jamie Moyer, who's doing OK for himself in Seattle. He probably won't ever be a #1 type starter, but he could very well be a quality #3 or #4 starter.
Granted, he doesn't have the fastball we would like, BUT I still think he could develop into a capable 4th or 5th starter. And if he couldn't be a starter, I think he'd make one hell of a middle reliever(and a cheap one too). That would make Uncle Drayton sooooooo happy.....
I can understand that.....Hell I'm still waiting for Redding to consistently "bring it". His stuff is probably better than Oswalt or Miller. Too bad his mental make-up IS NOT quite there yet.....will have patience though; he's still a kid.
I feel that at this point, Saarloos simply isn't ready for the majors (especially considering his brief minor league career). Clearly he needs more seasoning in the minors. Like Major said it's too early to give up on him. And I would not mind seeing Rolen in an Astros uniform.
I agree. The 'stros could use a shaking up. Some kind of trade that will help us make a run at October ball. Maybe a solid hitter. Someone that can play in the 5/6 slot.
