Rumors on the West Coast have the Padres discussing a trade with the Yanks. Going to NY would be Nevin in exchange for Weaver. Cincinnati has shown interest in Weaver and reportedly has offered Jose Guillen and Gabe White. There is no guarantee that Weaver will get traded due the current inability to know how Contreras will fare in his rotation spot. If Contreras fares well, Weaver is a goner. What could the Astros offer?
Weaver has stunk in NY. Why would he respond well at Minute Maid? Billy Wags for Pettitt and Johnson, perhaps. Get the Yanks a closer, the 'stros a starter and a young stud.
Nevin? Do they want a 3b? Ensberg looks like he will be a solid 3rd baseman for several years to come, I don't know if I'd want to give him up for Weaver though.
He is not a good gamble. Here is why: 2004: $6.25M 2005: $9.25M Considering we are very budget strapped, the only way a deal works is if NY eats a lot of his salary, or if we send wagner(I'm not willing to do that) or hidalgo(but why would they need him?) I don't know about you but I'm not willing to gamble on him finding his form with that contract. Let someone else try it, if they so desire.
Remember Pedro Astacio? He was toiling in mediocrity with Colorado in 2001 and after we acquired him in trade, he pitched lights out until that shoulder injury ended his season prematurely. Weaver is a talented pitcher. I think the pressure of starting in NY got to him. It doesn't help that Steinbrenner had been calling for his head since the season began. Contreras is Steinbrenner's guy. The BOSS always wins.
Countingcrow, I don't doubt Jeff is talented, but he was an enigma in detroit as well and his delivery makes him a good candidate for future arm trouble. Plus that salary is ridiculous for his production. Unless the yankees would like to take back some untradeable high priced salary of ours(Hidalgo is about all that comes to mind) or pay most of his remaining contract, let some other team make that gamble. If they will, I'd offer a decent bullpen arm and a couple solid farm hands for him.

The Tigers were sued by a flight attendant because of one of their team flights. She said there were all kinds of horrible behavior going on. One of the worst things was a guy went into the bathroom for a while and came out leaving a trail of smoke (not the Marlboro kind either). She confronted him (that is illegal, you know) and the flight devolved from there. Guess who the moron smoking pot on a team flight was?
Sooooo if (the injured) Nevin goes to the Yanks, presumably to play 3b (or run Mondesi out of town), wouldn't that make it difficult for Henson to play? Texans anyone? Actually, I wonder if it's possible to trade a player in one league for a player in another sport........
The astros are already somewhere around 8, 9 million over the budget so that's not going to happen. Plus who wants a guy that can't perform under pressure. He was great in Detroit where 10,000 fans showed up to watch a game, but can't cut it with the Yanks.
So 23,000 is a big step up for him! Houston would be a good fit, but I don't think he's worth the cash. Nothing can be worth a cent if he was recycled by George Almighty.
Who? That suddenly mortal, arm weary fellow for the Yanks? He remains pretty near the top. The rest of their 'pen? Bull! I want Wags to stay right here, but he may be more valuable to the Yanks and therefore with what he can bring in trade, to the 'stros, too.
