http://houston.astros.mlb.com/NASAp...nt_id=491103&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou Is this addition by subtraction or what? Zaun seemed like a good clubhouse guy. His comments about getting released show he is a class act. I hope this doesn't mess with the clubhouse atmosphere. Heck, maybe this will provide a kick in the pants to Biggio, not that the Stros would release him. Seems like a message being sent to everyone, produce or you are out. Hopefully Raul Chavez can come in and get some hits and handle the staff better than Zaun.
thank god, he was batting the just as bad as Ausmus. I believe he had a 212 or so average. On top of that his defense blows. He had been riding that pinch hit grandslam against Arizona he hit last year all this year. I am glad i will never have to see him come in during the 9th inning. I won't Miss Him
I liked the guy and sorry to see him leave, but he did suck...He only caught JR... At least Brad has great D, but his bat sucks too...
He's so used to being released or traded, he knows the drill and probably has stock comments prepared.
No skin off my back. I'm happy to see Chavez up there. Same deal as Ausmus. As long as he hits above .230 it will be gravy with his defense. Most likely, Mitch Melusky will be called up on 9/1 as well for another bat.
Now I'm not disagreeing with you; I'd be shocked if they released Biggio too. However, Reynolds' release at the beginning of the season I didn't exactly see coming either.
Why? Did you see it coming? Our only veteran arm who'd been with the team the majority of his career getting waved? I sure didn't.
Good point about Reynolds, arkoe. There are parallels with him and Biggio. Reynolds has been durable for the Braves this year. His numbers, ERA over 5 and Batting Average Against of around .300 is probably what the Astros thought Reynolds would produce when healthy. Robertson has about the same stats, so basically it is a wash for this year. However, getting Robertson experience in the majors will help the Astros in the future. If Lane were in the lineup, I am sure he could produce at least the same stats as Biggio. I still don't see the Astros releasing Biggio, but the team must have had more confidence in Biggio having a big year compared to what they thought Reynolds could produce.
The main problem with Reynolds is that his contract was laden with roster bonus incentives as opposed to performance incentives. In other words if he was on the roster at certain points during the season, he would receive the brunt of his money. His spring training did not convince the Astros that he would remain healthy and/or useful enough to warrant the potential big contract. If his contract was based on performance instead (e.g. innings pitched, wins, ERA) he probably would not have been released.
I am proud to admit that I am probably one of the happiest men in America now. Hey Gregg, I think I now of a few men's slow pitch softball leagues, that are open to new members.
Oh lord. You know you've got no argument when you find yourself using terms like "veteran" and bringing up tenure rather than talking about WHIP and ERA..
Ha, he always reminded me of one of those guys in a beer league. He did really slim down this year from last year so ya gotta give him credit for that. I really thought Zaun would work out here, oh well.
The best part about Gregg Zaun was his movie picks in ESPN: The Mag. DAMN, I HOPE THEY KEEP THAT COLUMN!
the funny thing is in the sports section today they have the article about the astros releasing him, then 2 pages over this car dealership(i think it was that) is advertising an appearance by "the astros' greg zaun" this saturday. maybe that won't be happening.
Meluskey was signed as a free agent a week or two ago. He is currently hitting around .200 in Round Rock. He was playing for an independant league team.
The same thing happened with Peter Munro. He was released just before he was scheduled to appear a a dealership as part of the no-hitter group. I'm not sure if he showed up with the others or not.
The messed up thing is I saw an interview of Zaun a couple of weeks ago on TV. He was talking about how he had found a home in Houston and he finally had a chance to do charity work. He had a benefit gala for I think it's called the Gregg Zaun Foundation recently.
