http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_y...N0bQ--?slug=ap-cubs-burnitz&prov=ap&type=lgns Cubs picked up Burnitz today for $5M. I'm kind of happy we didn't go after him, but he will probably produce better numbers this year than whoever we have out in center.
Kind of surprising Burnitz didn't sign with the 'Stros, since he is a white guy whose last name starts with the letter "B." I would much rather the Cubs get Burnitz than Magglio Ordonez, though.
Yup, especially for that price. I'm hoping this is something in which we can all come together in agreement!
You really should change the title of this thread. It gives the impression that the Astros or any of us really care. Burnitz for $5 million? No chance. He won't last the season in Chicago. Don't be the least bit suprised if he isn't starting by July and is traded by August.
Not that I was for Burnitz, but what is our starting lineup for OFs going to be at the start of the season? Lane, Taveras, Biggio? Lane, Taveras, Palmero?
Give Burke some off-season right field time... keep Biggio in left to start the season... and play Lamb at second. (Lane at center) Worst defensive team ever! But, our lineup would not be that inept.
Lamb at 2nd, seriously? He doesn't have the footwork to play 3B well, much less 2B. If you want to work him into the lineup, put Biggio at 2B, give Everett CF, Lane RF, and hide Lamb at LF. Actually I'd like to see him get more time, we badly need a lefty bat in the lineup.
I only said this because he did play some 2B last year, and he wasn't that bad... and I'd rather see him play the infield than be running around slow-footed in the outfield. I do think they'll find a way to make Lamb as much of an everyday player as possible... whether that be playing him out of position throughout ST, or letting him win the job outright from Ensberg (who I'd still like to have in the lineup).
Ensberg's the better fielder and has better career numbers, but Lamb clearly had a better 04. I hope he gets ABs. I only mentioned LF because, like 1B, its a nonessential defensive position where you put sluggers. Surely Lamb couldn't do worse than Biggio out there. Thinking aloud, I'd much rather have Mike Lamb starting the season, at any position, than Palmiero. That thought still makes me ill.
I think I read somewhere that Burnitz hit .230 away from COORS last year. We'll be just as good as the Cubbies by hitting Taveras and miles ahead in defence & base speed. For that reason, I think we should give Taveras a shot at cf.
I think Tavares will get his shot in ST but he better show something or he will start in AAA. They need to show him film of Ichiro and tell him to slap hit like him because with Tavares' speed, he will get alot of hits just like Ichiro does.
Obviously the scrubs needed him worse. Burnitz is TERRIBLE on the road, but he will hit those wind aided homers at wrigley. Dusty Baker is the real cancer on that team.
The way Dusty Baker handles the Cubs' pitching staff should be enough to get him fired. It's like he's trying to make Mark Prior's arm fall off.
i don't think burnitz is a bad pick up at all but i'm glad we didn't pay him that much. the best way this helps us is if it takes them out of the ordonez sweepstakes.
