    From ESPN Insider:

    Astros after 'Nefi?

Count the Astros as late entrants in the Neifi Perez derby?

Houston had scouts in attendance at Sunday's Rockies-Dodgers game, but, to the surprise of some, they were there to scout shortstop Neifi Perez (.297 Avg./.325 OBP/.439 Slg.) rather than right-hander Pedro Astacio, who made a forgettable start.

The Astros presently are playing Julio Lugo (.278 Avg./.337 OBP/.420 Slg.) at short, but haven't been satisfied with his performance, offensively or defensively.

Perez ranks as one of the better defensive shortstops in the game; however, Lugo is outhitting Perez on the road by a substantial margin, which is telling since both play in parks that severely favor hitters.

    Thoughts???

Sounds to me that Perez really only outperforms Lugo on the defensive side. And while it would be nice to have someone like Lugo who can hit decently and play defense, I doubt the cost of Perez would really outweigh the benefits.

We already have two big holes in the lineup with Ausmus and the pitcher spot. We shouldn't add another one with Everett. The guy couldn't hit a ball off a tee.

At the beginning of the season, they said they wanted to season Everett (24 y/o) for another year or two at AAA. They had already trown Lugo (26 y/o) into the mix sooner than they had planned, and figured the mix of a young SS (Lugo) and an experienced one (Vis) would give him that opportunity.

I kind of wondered why all talk of Everett had disappeared, especially with the injury to Spiers and Lugo's recent slump. His numbers at New Orleans this year aren't very good -- especially for someone who's supposed to be a standout. (Assuming "Jefferey Everett" is Adam's real name) in 64 games, 239 ABs, he's batting .239, OBS .346, Slug .349, OPS .695. Without kowing his defensive numbers, I don't think he's ready for MLB.

Carl Everett is a cancer. He jawed with his teammates and his manager. Not to mention the dumbass things he says to the media like man has never been to the moon and dinosaurs never existed. We don't need that kind of bad influence in the clubhouse.

Houston also got Greg Miller, left-handed stud minor-league pitcher.

The Astros also been playing Vis at short, who's been hitting better and has always been a good defensive player. The funny thing is, when Lugo starts performing poorly, they put in Vis more and Lugo seems to play better.

Lugo's just young and needs to develop MLB experience. He's made a few goofs, but the SS play of the Astros has been pretty good. I'd be surprised if they took on a more expensive player at that position, especially with Adam Everett waiting in the wings.
