Jeff Bagwell, who left a cushy front-office job to return to the field as the Astros’ hitting coach at the All-Star break, announced Saturday that he wouldn’t return in that role in 2011.

Bagwell was offered a two-year deal to stay on as the hitting coach, but with seven- and nine-year-old daughters at home, he wasn’t willing to make that commitment.

“This was a very difficult decision for me,” he said in a press release. “I enjoyed my time as hitting coach a great deal. The players were great and I can’t think of a better coaching staff to work with. They were outstanding.”

Despite trading Lance Berkman to the Yankees at the deadline, the Astros improved considerably on offense in the second half. They went from hitting .238/.296/.347 before the break to .259/.311/.379 afterwards.

Bagwell will be eligible for the Hall of Fame for the first time this winter. He leads a new class of eligibles that also includes Kevin Brown, Rafael Palmeiro, Larry Walker and John Olerud.

I really didn't think he was coming back thought, glad he didn't pull a Favre. The Baggy Effect is no more, hope he gets into the HoF

I think Bagwell will definitely get into the HOF, but its going to take a few tries though.

Sad to see one of my heros leave but he wanted to be with his family, can't blame him for that.

I'd love to see the club look at Bill Doran or Brad Ausmus.

I'm hopin' Bags gets into the HOF on his second year of eligability and Biggio should make it as a 1st ballot. That way they go in together. I think thats fair and it would be a fitting end for them

On the bright side, at least this means he won;t gets promoted to manager only for the front office to decide whether to fire him because the team happens to suck during his tenure.

 naw jk it deserved it's own thread.

Really seemed like bags helped as hitting coach towards the end of the year. Would have liked to see how much he would've helped with a whole year.

He did some good things with the lineup in the second half, but I kinda feel like the work he did with the lineup will carry over no matter who the new hitting coach is. Some of it is him trying to be humble, but he would have you think that all he did was tell the guys to relax for once and quit obsessing over film when things turn south.

Enjoyed seeing Bags in the dugout once again, but wouldn't want to see him become the scapegoat should the offense start to struggle (well more than they should). Maybe he can rejoin Brownie and JD in the booth.

Smart move and better for the Astros in the long run.

I would hate to See Bagwell fired and start any potential bad blood between the Club and an Astros legend.

Why??? Doran is well regarded coach and Ausmus is one of the smartest players in all of baseball. Ausmus was pretty bad as a hitter but hitting coaches aren't necessarily the best hitters but rather those who understood the techniques and physiological side of it. Rudy Jaramillo is regarded as the best hitting coach going today and just look up his career stats.

I figured this would happen, hard to imagine a superstar wanting to go through that grind so soon after retirement

I wonder if the Astros take a look at Don Baylor as the new possible hitting coach. I don't know why the Rockies got rid of him after they were a top 10 offense this past year.

Good name but it looks like he might be heading to Zona as their hitting coach.
