Interesting. Figured acquiring Fowler would take him out of the equation. Y'all like Fowler/Springer/Choo as a long-term OF?
I was watching MLB Network and they were talking about this, and then I noticed a tweet was buried inside the "Astros Offseason" thread. (I hate threads that act as a forum inside a forum. Can't find news. Breaking this out to a thread) They were talking about a "surprise mystery" team for Soo-Choo. Joel Sherman said, "Three different executives here, upon leaving the Winter Meetings, said, 'Watch out for the Astros with Shin-Soo Choo.' "
Copied from other thread I'm watching MLB Network right now and they just had a little segment about this: 1. Multiple execs said they wouldn't be surprised if he ended up on the Astros 2. Feels the market is slipping for Choo so the Astros are jumping at the opportunity 3. It'd be a nice way to win some fans back after historic low TV ratings (F U Comcast) 4. Nice way to ease Springer into the Outfield. 5. Luhnow values OBP over everything and Choo has had one of the best over the past few years. Sorry for no link, it's just what I heard on MLB Tonight.
Really like this idea. Santana is no lock and Choo could be our Werth (for better or for worse). All of the sudden, you go from one of the worst outfields in baseball to having what should be a decent to good outfield!

Anyone have ESPN insider? there's an article about Astros as potential spot for him there. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Scott Boras --agent for Drew, Choo & Co. has left Winter Mtgs, meaning no transactions regarding his clients will happen in waning hours.</p>— Claire Smith (@MzCSmith) <a href="https://twitter.com/MzCSmith/statuses/411238641449447424">December 12, 2013</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
This? Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo reportedly wants to sign a deal that would pay him a similar amount of money that Jacoby Ellsbury received -- seven-years, $153 million -- from the New York Yankees. There may not be too many teams out there willing to shell out that much money for one player, but the Houston Astros might be one such club. Last season, the Astros' payroll was only a bit over $26 million. Even after adding the contracts of Dexter Fowler and Scott Feldman to the 2014 roster, the team will still be suiting up only four players making more than $1 million (Jose Altuve and Chad Qualls are the other two). So perhaps it's not crazy after all to see Bob Nightengale of USA Today reporting that a veteran general manager stated his belief that Choo would end up signing with the Astros when all is said and done. The Texas Rangers, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, are uncomfortable about offering Choo anything more than a five-year deal. If they don't increase the length of that deal, Choo may well end up in a different part of the Lone Star state.

If we did sign him, our OF could be very good defensively for our young pitchers. 3 guys capable of playing CF. Would be so different from the days of running Lance Berkman in CF. Edit: Of course, if we did sign him, it could mean thoughts about trading Springer or not putting him on opening day roster.
Can't imagine the Astros would consider giving him 7 years or anything close to Ellsbury-money either (nor should they).

They have been publicly pessimistic about their chances of signing him, but that could be posturing. Per Yahoo!’s Jeff Passan, Choo has a seven-year offer on the table (the Rangers deny that it’s from them), and he may sign with the first team to give him an eighth year.
