http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2006-07-28-deals-clubs-mental-makeup_x.htm Says the Astros are full steam ahead on Soriano and believe they have the best offer. WOW This could be bad info, but it's the first I've seen of the Astros going after Soriano.
And yet another likely leak by the Washington front office... as they're trying to drum up more offers. There's NO WAY the Astros would tell anybody what they're doing... what good would it do them? (not to mention, they would never tell anybody that they have "the best offer").
My guess is Taveras would be involved along with Hirsch...Washington has had trouble all year finding a CF
From the same article: "The Cardinals remain hopeful of acquiring Brewers outfielder Carlos Lee, a Cardinals executive said, adding he believes the Tigers and Twins also are heavily involved." Here's Stark via yesterday's ever informative mlbtraderumors.com: "The Angels, Dodgers, Yankees, and Mariners could also come into play." Notice what team's not mentioned? If you read it, it's 99% likely to be b.s.
the astros shouldn't give up any pitching prospects for a guy who may not be here next year. this is not a randy johnson situation where you were pretty much assured of making the playoffs and you just wanted a guy for a true title run. nothing is assured with this team, this season. a deal giving up real assets in the minor leagues should be benificial long term. IMHO
You are correct about the Astros not leaking anything BUT...Timmy did come out and say that they are after a major impact guy and that it might be a rental in today's paper...so to me, that is basically saying who we are going after without mentioning names
Terrible idea. If the Astros get Soriano, for let's say Lidge and Hirsh, and he decides to leave next year I'll be very upset. I don't want to lose Hirsh for a rental.
I want them to get a bat as much as the next guy, but must not rent a player. If they can't get him to extend his contract with the trade I say we shouldn't do it.
guys, one of the ESPN columnists wrote that Patton is the better prospect (over Hirsch), and Hirsch really projects only to a 4th starter. Can someone who has seen them pitch more regularly help out on that opinion? (Makes me remember how Halama was highly touted but never amounted to more than a serviceable 4th-5th starter/bullpen guy)
they said they are optimistic that they will have the best offer...we have already made it clear we are going after a big bat so does this really surprise you
OMG I just got back from lunch after having a conversation with some co-workers how we are not going to do anything then I see this thread... Wowowowoowow.... I know it might be another Carlos Beltran situation but dangit we need to win now
Might as well include Burke...If he were to get traded and if he were to re-sign, Soriano won't play outfield after Biggio retires.
Baseball America rates our prospects as follows - 1. Jason Hirsh, rhp 2. Troy Patton, lhp 3. Fernando Nieve, rhp 4. Jimmy Barthmaier, rhp 5. Eli Iorg, of 6. Hunter Pence, of 7. Felipe Paulino del Guidice, rhp 8. Juan Gutierrez, rhp 9. Brian Bogusevic, lhp 10. Josh Flores, of Of course this was before the year started, but Hirsh has been dominate all year.
i agree completely as well. this team needs to be dumping players for prospects and anything else that will help for next season and beyond.
If we were to make the deal and SOMEHOW get Soriano to sign a long-term deal, we'd have a pretty formidable middle of the order with Berkman/Soriano/Ensberg.... I doubt we make the deal for either Tejada and Soriano...I think Purpura knows that he could be in deep doo-doo if he messes this situation up....
i hear you on the all caps for the somehow....because if i'm him or his agent, i'm saying, "i'm testing the free agent market in the offseason!" no way i'm signing a deal right now. and you'd use carlos beltran as Exhibit "A" as to why you should not do that....how much did that guy boost his value in the playoffs, alone?
