While Biggio is clearly not the player he once was, he is 14th in the league in Runs and 6th in doubles. I did not do a complete search but he probably leads lead-off hitters (or is close to the lead) in HRs and RBI. He has made the transisition to CF O.K. and only committed 1 error. I suspect his assists are better than what the Astros were expecting. He may not get to enough balls, but the Astros have no one ready for the majors that would do significantly better. He is clearly not a flop. He has performed as expected. Miller has had a disappointing season, but he is saving his best for last. His ERA this month is in the low 2s. Disappointing, but not a flop (perhaps you should have used a different title). Oswalt, clearly not a flop. I'd go with Brian Hunter, Julio Lugo and Greg Zaun.
I think the more appropriate term is, disappointment. Biggest disappointment, in my eyes, is Berkman. His projected #s will be pretty far off from what he produced last season. All great players have off years, so I am hoping Lance will rebound next season. Wade Miller is up there too. He has had a very disappointing season, his recent success notwithstanding. I have to say Ausmus also. I mean, you pretty know that he isn't going to give you anything on offense. But he has just stunk this year at the plate. With Everett and him, we have nothing at the bottom of the order. Suprises: Ensberg Redding Lidge Biggio (mainly for his handling of the switch to CF; his offense #s were pretty similar to what they were last year)
Wade Miller!! Can't blame Oswalt for things that are not in his controll (injury). And Bidge just isn't that good anymore. If you were counting on him to put up All-Star numbers then you were kidding yourself. Miller has been fairly heathy and has been inconsistant the whole year.
Craig Biggio does not lead leadoff hitters in HR's or RBI's. He's 4th in HR's and 5th in RBI's. Although he does lead all leadoff hitters in stirkeouts! And he had one of the worst averages for leadoff hitters. While he has not been terrible this year, I don't think he deserves props for a good year. He does have outfield assists, but that is because everyone runs on him.
Miller...by far has been the biggest flop. If that guy were even pitching near to the level that he was at last year we would already have the pennant race locked up and maybe have a decent chance in the playoffs. But with him pitching like this we have no chance at all and we are going to be in a dogfight to make it to the playoffs.
i can't just think of 1 so here is a list Busts Julio Lugo Greg Zaun Brian Hunter Dissapointments Wade Miller Orlando Merced Surprises Morgan Ensberg Brad Lidge Jeriome Robertson Richard Hidalgo Craig Biggio has been decent. I think he can still contribute to our team but i would like to see Jason Lane play more Lance Berkman has somewhat dissapointed me. First, he only has 22 home runs and isn't even batting 300 this year. Plus who else hates when this guy bats right handed. It screams out every time. Jeff Bagwell is having a solid year, much better than last. Jeff Kent is having a great year considering he missed a month. Overall this is what i expected from the team. We have a bunch of home run hitters and not contact hitters who can get on base and steal bases.
if we're talking disappointment...it's gotta be Wade...i mean, he's been healthy...and he hasn't even been half as good as he was last year.
Team is so much better it's hard to pick a goat. biggio has played horrible, but he's the leader. Lugo has to be the goat.
I think it's time we started cutting Brad a little slack. Look at his numbers in August: BA .328 (leads the team) OBP .429 SLG .483 OPS .911 And while looking up these numbers I also found that Ron Villone is hitting .385 in August!
In the NL, Furcal has 15 HRs, Biggio is next with 12. Furcal has 49 RBI, Biggio is next with 47. Until both leagues play by the same offensive rules, it's hard to compare stats between the two. Since a non-pitcher precedes AL leadoff men in the batting order, they will tend to get more RBI.
Wade Miller. The guy is supposed to be one of the top starters in the National League but he has been very inconsistent. Biggio is not doing that bad, he has put some good streaks together.
Injured or not, Oswalt has been a flop. Sure, injuries arent under his control, but thats irrelevant. Whats relevant, however, is the fact that he hasnt done crap for this team this year. If someone told me that Oswalt would have 6 wins come September 1st, I would have shat all over the place. Biggio numbers were expected. Miller is a huge flop also, but Oswalt was supposed to be a cy young candidate.
How are his injuries irrelevant when they're the exact reason why he hasn't posted the numbers this year?
Concerning Miller, the question is how good a pitcher is he really? He has had a couple of good years and prior to this year he was 37-18. That is an outstanding record. But, let's put it in perspective, take out his W-L against Milwaukee and Cincinnati and his record is 23-17. He is 2-1 against those 2 teams this year so his all-time W-L is now 47-29. His record against everyone other than the Reds and Brewers is 31-27.
I wouldn't say Wade is Lima, but he has really dropped off this past year...Very little is run support... I think the surprise is Redding who has been the most consistent and his has been more run support issues...
Oswalt has been a bust this year. Someone earlier said that Oswalt hasnt been a bust because he has been injured. Well, in my book, you cant use injuries as an excuse. Bottomline: Oswalt hasnt accomplished nearly what he was supposed to accomplish. Therefore, he is a flop. Just like Schilling and Johnson have been total busts this year for the DBacks. Just like Piazza has been a flop for the Mets.
