The Houston Astros announced today that the club has recalled outfielder Luke Scott from Triple A Round Rock. Scott will take the 25-man roster spot of right-handed pitcher Chad Harville, who was claimed today on outright waivers by the Boston Red Sox. The announcement was made by General Manager Tim Purpura.
Scott, 27, hit .286 (114x398) with a team-leading 31 home runs this season in 103 games for Triple A Round Rock. He drove in 87 runs while hitting 25 doubles and scoring 69 runs. Despite not joining the Express until he was optioned from Houston on May 3, his 31 home runs lead the Pacific Coast League to date. The Astros starting left fielder on Opening Day, Scott hit .154 (6x39) with one RBI in 14 games for the club earlier this season. Scott will be in uniform for tomorrow night's Astros game against the Cincinnati Reds at Minute Maid Park.

Harville, 28, was 0-2 with a 4.46 ERA (19ER/38.1IP) in 37 appearances for the Astros this season. In 135 career Major League games, he is 4-6 with one save and a 4.94 ERA (73ER/133IP

Makes no sense to get rid of Harville instead of Burns. Harville was started to come around.

Harville was out of options so he would have to go through waivers before he can be sent down to minors. Burns still hade options so why didn't they just send him down.

The Boston Red Sox claimed righthanded reliever Chad Harville off waivers from Astros today, taking over his contract.

With no intention of keeping Harville eligible for the postseason roster before Wednesday night's deadline to make players eligible for the postseason roster, Astros general manager Tim Purpura put Harville on waivers with the intention of putting him on outright waivers.

Class AAA Round Rock outfielder Luke Scott, who was the Astros' opening day left fielder, will join the Astros on Tuesday for the start of a three-game series against the Reds at Minute Maid Park. Since Scott, 27, joined Round Rock on May 3, he hit .286 (114-for-398) with a Pacific Coast League-leading 31 home runs, 25 doubles and 87 RBIs.

Harville was 0-2 with a 4.46 ERA, allowing 19 earned runs over 38 1/3 innings over 37 games.

"Chad Harville was claimed by the Red Sox, so we're going to bring up Luke Scott for tomorrow," Purpura said. "That hopefully will be an offensive boost for us. (Scott) has played very well for us. He leads the League in home runs. He's really been steady. Hopefully we'll get some offense out of him. (Whether Scott becomes the starting left fielder is) to be determined. I'm sure he'll get some starts."

Before Harville, 28, was claimed, the Astros were carrying 12 pitchers on the 25-man roster and 39 players overall on the 40-man roster. Players must be on the 40-man roster to be eligible for the postseason roster.

The Astros now have 38 players on the 40-man roster and 11 pitchers on the 25-man roster, leaving two slots to be filled soon. Class AAA Round Rock catcher Raul Chavez, who was taken off the roster last month, will likely be added to the 40-man roster soon.

"We put him through waivers with the intent to outright," Purpura said of Harville. "We have 12 pitches right now. Having to set the playoff roster by Wednesday night, we decided he wasn't going to be on the playoff roster. It's not totally unexpected (that Harville was claimed), but we would have liked to keep him. He was very professional. He understood."

They apparently were also looking for room on the 40 man roster. Just sending Burns down would not open up a 40 man roster spot.

I understand that. I hear Scott Strickland is looking nasty at RR.

About time they brought him up .. Even if he doesn't do anything at the ML level this year, I think it is definitely worth a shot.

I would have preferred to keep Chad, but I'm not heartbroken over him being gone. I think Burns would have been better to send down.

They still would have had to drop someone from the 40 man roster, hence the out right release.

Any bat would be welcomed right now. Hate it about Harville, but the guy just seemed like such an under-achiever to me. As someone stated earlier, no big loss. It's kind of interesting that the Red Sox claimed him. But, their bullpen is such a nightmare until Foulke comes back, so they had to try something.

I still hope that miraculously we could land another solid bat.

As much as I love Luke's sweet and "major league" swing + plus his undeniable potential, he still have not done it in the majors and I would prefer a "surer" thing for now than just hoping for a potential great bat to arive in this crunch time of the season. Hopefully he add spark but it indeed will be unfair on him since he will have all the pressure on him to prove that his output at AAA was not a fluke.

Here is wishing luke the best.

PS. Would it be nice if Aubrey was still gettable? Gosh he would have been perfect here even more so than Junior.

I love Scott's potential. However, i would feel alot better if we could of gotten a proven MLB bat to finsish the season with. If we could just get a good contact hitter that could make all the difference for this team.

I think Purpura is to scared to ask Drayton to make a deal because he might give away a prospect that succeeds elsewhere, whereas if we had Hunsicker i really believe something would be or have been done by now. I mean were talking about the playoffs that are right in our grasp! We just need to score some runs. We don't need a Griffey, but a Preston Wilson or a young Carl Crawford type guy would fill the whole just fine.

I don't ecpect much from Bagwell if he returns, but his presence and ability to draw walks will still be nice and better than we have now. It's tough to ask Lance and Morgan to carry this team themselves.
