Minor move but whatever.. [rQUOTEr]The Astros claimed catcher Craig Tatum off of waivers from the Orioles, MLBTR has learned. Tatum, 28, has three partial seasons of catching experience at the Major League level and isn't yet eligible for arbitration. Tatum has a .223/.291/.264 line in 299 MLB plate appearances and has stopped 21% of stolen base attempts against him. In eight seasons as a minor leaguer, the 2004 third round pick has a .249/.316/.377 batting line and has stopped 35% of stolen base attempts.[/rQUOTEr]
Does make you wonder about the point of a move like this. Is it just spring training fodder and maybe AAA filler? Is there a reason to think Q wouldn't be back? He is arbitration eligible but I can't imagine he's going to get much more of a raise over the $1m he made in 2011.
Astros also claimed IF Brian Bixler today. With Ed Wade doing work acquring Tatum and Bixler, I hope you are printing your 2012 World Series tickets as we speak.
I'm guessing he was brought in just to have another veteran catcher in spring training. That sounds trivial, but think about the numbers down in Kissimmee. They'll have a couple dozen pitchers and maybe half a dozen catchers and half of those will likely be kids just in camp to get a cup of coffee with the big team. It's nice to have someone who has a little major league experience there to help out the pitching staff. If he gets hot and hits .400 in spring training and pushes other catchers in camp, all the better.
This is a turning point in the organization. Quote from Ed Wade: "Everybody chill the F-out.....I GOT this"
Astros recently signed OF Brad Snyder, IF Joe Thurston, and Nick Stavinoha to minor league deals/invite to ST. If you're keeping track: Craig Tatum, Brad Snyder, Brian Bixler, Travis Buck, Nick Stavinoha, Joe Thurston
I'm actually a little intrigued about Stavinoha and Buck. Stavinoha has been a really effective pinch-hitter in the recent past and he is a versatile player in the field. Buck is a really toolsy outfielder that just never quite put it together. He is certainly worth taking a flier on.
He'll start next year, these are all organizational depth guys. We don't have any catchers at triple A. Quintero is the backup.
