Munro is having a tough time so far. Not doing much better than he was when he faced the cards last time as a starter.

Cards lead 3-0 through 3 innings.

Cards have gotten a couple of doubles. An error by Kent put a runner in scoring postion with only 1 out still, and then which lead to a run scored.

We are not doing anything well now. We never come through in big situations like bases loaded 1 out to start this game. Our pitching is really a trouble spot. Roy and Redding are the only 2 starters I feel like will actually pitch well when they take the mound. Wade is way off and this parade of other people (Linebrink, Munro, etc.) just kills us. A lot of our wins so far have been nice comebacks, but that kind of thing won't happen all year. We have no consistency and rarely jump out to early leads (Friday against the Cubs and Prior being a big exception). I don't know what the answer is to any of it. We need to improve in every area right now.

yeah that game was absolutely pathetic in so many ways . . . and what sucks even more is that this atrocity was one of the only ones i get to see on tv, given that it was on national tv. i always wait for weeks ahead of time for any astros games on national tv and this kind of game is what i get in return . . . it's a darn shame. :(

That is so true, reminds me of what I go through with the rockets. Waiting so long for a game on tv, and then they blow it.

I guess no one saw Saarloos pitch last night. Man did he look awesome. 3 innings, 1 hit and 4 strikeouts. He was throwing something (splitter or sinker) that was unhittable. I would love to see Jimy give him a start soon.

I saw him... was impressed... and chalked it up to a combination of two reasons:

    1. The Cardinals had a 10-0 lead, not looking really to hit the ball...

    2. Ausmus was calling his pitches.

Thus, since we can´t prove if 1.) was the reason, why doesn´t Jimy try to figure out if 2.) was. Hey... as long as Robertson´s doing ok, and zaun is already his personal catcher, Saarloos would have a shot with Ausmus.

Unless the Astros bring in another pitcher, they have absolutely no chance in hell at making the playoffs.

I don't agree with all the crap the pitching staff has taken so far. It isn't as bad as many fans seem to believe. You have to figure Roy and Wade find themselves this year, and Redding has put it together this season. That is 3 quality starters. Robertson is showing signs of figuring it out, and a 5th starter is a 5th starter, one of the most mediocre positions in all of sports. Doesn't matter too much is my point.

Anyways, I want another pitcher as much as the next guy, but do you see any rotations that are so intimidating compared to ours in the central and the NL period?

    Of possible playoff teams:

    ATL-Maddux-Ortiz-Hampton-Reynolds-Byrd/Ramirez

Sorry this staff will only cause Braves fans to cry when they flop in the postseason, again.

    MON-Vasquez-Livan-Day-Vargas-El Duque

Do you really think they are better than ours, and going to be able to last for the long haul?

    PHI-Millwood-Wolf-Myers-Padilla-Duckworth

This is a very good staff, but padilla/duckworth need to pitch up to their potential for it to be heads and shoulders above houston's.

    CHC-Prior-Wood-Clement-Estes-Zambrano.

One of the best staffs in baseball and that says a lot as the back 3 are incredibly inconsistent. Oswalt/Miller are about equal to prior-wood, and unless clement finds himself like he did last year, this staff is not appreciably better than the Astros.

    STL-Morris-Williams-Tomko-Stephenson-Simontacchi

Again, a staff that is 2 deep. Unless tomko puts it together, they are behind the Astros provided Tim keepa up his newfound success.

    SF-Schmidt-Rueter-Moss-Ainsworth-Foppert

Schmidt is a stud, Rueter is solid, but Oswalt-Miller is better when on, and redding is right around moss's range. I love Ainsworth and Foppert, but they arent making this staff better than houston's.

    LA-Brown-Perez-Nomo-Ishii-Dreifort.

Another good staff, but Brown and dreifort could get hurt for the year any day now, ishii is inconsistent, and perez hasn't found last years form yet. I would put them above ours tentatively but it could all fall apart just as easily too. They do have Andy Ashby in their bullpen at least though.

    ARI-Johnson-Schilling-Kim-Dessens-Good/Webb

Nice one two, but that 3-5 is below average as well, but I don't see that offense scoring enough runs to make the playoffs.

What does all this mean you ask?

It means no one in the NL has an overwhelming pitching staff like Oakland does in the AL.

It means that with houston's bullpen, offense and a normal Roy and Wade, they will contend for a playoff spot and have a good chance of winning the central division, as is.

My playoff prediction as of right now.

    ATL-East
HOU-Central(cubs dont have good enough pitching to offset that offense, and cardinals have too many holes as well)
SF-West(LA cant hit, and I would bet on one of brown/dreifort getting hurt before long)
STL-WC, barely over the young phillies who just don't have quite enough to stop a well oiled cardinal team, who plays the game the right way.

I think that houston or STL is the WC and the other the central champ, with the phillies and dodgers and cubs all close behind.

Finally, the astros are eighth in the NL in runs allowed with 238, and sixth in runs scored with 247.

Now if you factor in Roy/Wade have been shadows of themselves and the offense has really been carried by one person(Kent or Bagwell) most of the year, these numbers should both improve.

And with all our team issues we are still over 500.

There is no question even as is these Astros are capable of making the playoffs.

    DVauthrin --

Preach on preacher!! Your glass is half-full and I'm loving it!! I agree...the best is yet to come for this team, and they're still right in the thick of the race despite their two aces performing well below their capabilities.

    Madmax,

    No problem.

I just believe if you told me Lance would take off the month of April, Bagwell the month of may, and neither of Roy or Wade approaching their ability and track record, we would be under 500 right now.

Also if you told me we are 6-4 against the cards, a nemesis of ours, with all these troubles so far, I wouldn't believe it.

There is something different about this team this year. They are never out of a ballgame, even down 5 runs in the 8th inning.

I think we will make the playoffs and win a series at least because of one player:

    That player is Jeff Kent.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't remember any of our new picthers ever coming in and kicking ass their first start.

I predicted Bags' breakout last night, I'm predicting a great performance by Johnson tonight.

    The Astrodamus has spoken.
