Dang rimrocker, I didn't think you were that old. Heck I was an Astro Buddy for 2 years, 1971-1972. Mine were Larry Dierker and Bob Watson.
BF*-- I'm so old I don't remember all my buddies. I know I had Metzger one year and I think another one was Lee May. Anyway, it was a cool program. Another memory is of my Minor League Team (8 or 9?) going to a game (don't remember who they were playing) that lasted 17 innings. We got home around 2:30 am. Thought we were so cool at school the next day.
My little league team went every year, but one was memorable because of what didn't happen...We were going to the game on June 15, 1976 against the Pirates when the rain got so bad we had to turn back. Yes, we had tickets to the only game ever rained out at the Astrodome. Bummer, especially for a 12 year old.
Behad I was working at Astroworld that day. I believe we officially closed at 4. The mid shift started at noon and once you started working they had to pay you 4 hours so they wanted to make sure they got their monies worth from the mid-shifters.
Man, I was an Astros buddie "way" back between 1992 and 1994. I don't know what you mean about being an Astros buddy to a specific player though. They just gave me a hat, a picture of Craig Biggio, and some other stuff. Did you guys get to meet your Astros Buddies?
Bob Watson. Always Bob Watson. The 7 or 8 "membership" games were a pretty sweet deal. I also remember them letting us on the field, and that was when I learned just how dangerous the (original) turf was firsthand. Tripped over a seam!
