If there is a need for a clipboard holder, I'm available. We need a more experienced coaching staff, all of the contenders (with the exception of Utah) has someone on their bench with some significant coaching experience, hell Dallas has cornered the market! Mr. Mean is a defensive specialist but this year he is a little slow to the draw. Who are these other guys and what do they bring to the table? Are there any assistant coaching possibilities that make sense for this franchise?
They had audio of Jim Boylen (Rockets assistant with the receding hairline) on 610 during halftime of last nights game. In summary: The dude was nothing more than a male cheerleader, yelling crap like "Hands up" "Good Job Pose" etc. You make a good point AB. Besides Larry Smith the Rocket coachers are pretty lackluster.
I was also thinking about the idea of finding a new coaching team that could teach a zone that our players wouldn't yawn over. Then I imagined Rudy talking about how he loves his hardworking assistant coaches and how his loyalty would get in the way of making a tough basketball related decision.
AB, I agree. I have mentioned in numerous posts that I am a bit skeptical about the Rockets assistant coaches. Especially skeptical about them "TEACHING" the younger players the fundamentals. They come from a background of "game film" and might be able to disect other team players and offer some suggestions to our players on how to play against the opponent but what do they offer in terms of TEACHING these youngsters how to play the game? The development of Griffin is CRUCIAL. Where is his post play? This team DOES need some veteran assistant coaches that have either a "teaching" background or an x's and o's background. It appears Rudy's advatage is his ability to deal, manage and relate with players, but does that translate into x's and o's and fundamental teaching? I don't know. It doesn't seem to. It seems to me that Rudy needs some more help. Chris
How's your video experience? Can you edit tapes? If so, then give CD and Rudy a call! Oh...they may need you to practice with the players jacking up shots in the pregame and shagging balls for the post players. Are you up for that? Seriously - I'm not sure there is a group of "assistants" resumes more sad than ours.
Well assistant coaches don't win championships. BUT they surely do help. Look at Dallas. They have like 12 coaches!!!! And good coaches too. The Rockets could use some good assistant coaches who are knowledgeable and good teachers...... And who have good scouting reports. Find someone like Eric Musselman!
I would like to see Avery Johnson brought in once he stops playing. I think he can teach Steve alot about running the offense and reading defenses.
with ya AB....I commented yesterday from the SA game that the coaches were doing zero talking or instruction from what I could see.....I watch other benches and there is a lot of talk and chatter and one on ones.... now in all fairness, Jim does seem animated on the bench. Larry just sits there with a clipboard, so maybe his calling is in practice, but the other 2 coaches look like grad assistants who are still star struck....I see zero coaching out of them on the sideline....
What I would like to see: Head Coach Offense Coach Defense Coach C Coach PF Coach SF Coach SG Coach PG Coach Each position has too many facets for a couple of guys to watch in general. They each need a coach to watch each person's every move. Reward with praise and time on the floor. Teach with words and as a last resort - less time on the floor. Then there needs to be someone to watch the O as a whole - the D as a whole and everything as a whole. This video team and punch clock subs is not rewarding or teaching.
