Feeling at home, Yao vows to beat S. Korea -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BUSAN, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Feeling at home at the South Koreanport city of Busan, the 2002 NBA top draft pick Yao Ming vowed to beat the hosts in their possible final clash in the Asian Games' men's basketball. ¡¡¡¡ "Busan lies against the sea and the climate is very comfortable," Yao Ming said here on Monday. "It is also moist here, just like my hometown Shanghai." ¡¡¡¡ Yao eyed a final clash against South Korea, China's arch-rivalsin Asia, and vowed to beat them. ¡¡¡¡ "We will beat them if we meet them in the final," he said. ¡¡¡¡ Defending champions China and hosts South Korea were consideredthe only title favorites in the 12-team basketball tournament. ¡¡¡¡ According to Yao, the best inside players of Asia come from China, the country which has Wang Zhizhi and Meng Bateer playing in the NBA and Yao on the way. ¡¡¡¡ "The South Korean team has pretty good forwards and guards," the 2.26-meter Yao said. "I also knew about Seo Jang-hoon and Kim Joo-sung, they play very good inside game. But I believe that China has the best inside players of Asia." ¡¡¡¡ Yao, who has yet to sign his NBA contract after being picked bythe Houston Rockets as the top pick in June's NBA Draft, is likelyto get the nod from the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) to play in the NBA after the Busan Asian Games, according to a seniorsports official. ¡¡¡¡ "Things concerning Yao's playing in the NBA will be made clear after the Asian Games," said Li Furong, deputy chef-de-mission of the Chinese Asiad delegation, at press conference Sunday morning. ¡¡¡¡ The Chinese, who have secured a place in the quarter-final round, will take on Hong Kong of China in their last preliminary group A match later on Monday. Is it just me or has Yao bulked up his upper body since the draft? I am usually a harsh critic of this, but his arms look pretty damn toned.
His forearms still look a bit thin, but I see more definition in his upper arms. I wonder if he has started workin out? I hope the Rox get him into a weight room when he gets here, get that upper body more developed and the rest of the league could be in real trouble.
Yao Ming will not put on a lot of bulk onto his upper body and arms, but he will get stronger. Its not something that can be rushed without steroids.
Well, Hong Kong started off a little slow, scoring 18 points in the first half, but they made a strong push with a 14 point 3rd quarter. At the end, though, they couldn't hit much, and China barely scraped by with a 74 point victory. BTW, what is an error? I thought that was a baseball stat. Is that what they call a turnover?
Turnover is error, but error includes other mistakes players can make, such as miss a putback, miss a <5-feet shot, chase referees around the court, etc. Does this answer your question?
Man, there must be a pretty big problem with chasing refs around the court if they keep a stat for it... As for missing putbacks and five footers....Hell, Moses Malone made a living off missing shots to pad his offensive rebounding stats!
It's good to see that he's not playing much when he doesn't need to. How's Bateer doing in the Asian Games?
Yao Ming is accepting an interview of a Korean TV Station. http://www.sportsol.com.cn/news/asinagame/hero/2002-09-30/54621.shtm Nothing special.
Wait a minute. Why is China playing Hong Kong? I thought Hong Kong is back with China after 500 years of thingies with England. I think we had a thread about this before. Somebody give me answers.
I am looking within... my text books. Okay I am not. But I remember in 98 I think, Hong Kong was given back to China. And they made a big deal about the population of China increasing by a lot more than they already have. I remember it was a Question/Answer on Jeopardy.
