It's really cool we kept and celebrate this history. It's really an educational celebration of Emancipation and the past before mass communication among other things
I don’t remember it being taught in school as a kid but it being brought up. Pretty impressive to see how it has grown. FYI the city blocked off the block In front of what was The Third Precinct police station in Minneapolis for a block party. That was the precinct that Derek Chauvin had worked at and was the epicenter of the protests in 2020.
Ironically, in the very state in which the holiday originated, Texas does not recognize the (now) federal holiday as an actual day off for employees. It is considered a "skeleton crew" holiday and state offices remain open.
