I think China has got a lot of Olympics gold medalist. Liu Xiang is PROPERLY the best athlete in China as well.
Liu Xiang is extremely famous in China but if Yao or him were to walk down the streets in other Asian countries, Yao would be more recognized.

There is always Lin Dan, the best badminton player for the past 3 years. Guo Jing Jing, the diver who won multiple world champs. And alot of those table tennis players which dominate every single competition they play in. All are famous in their own right, its just that this sports is not popular in America, thats why you have no idea who they are.
