Anthony felt depressed and alone in Athens

Carmelo Anthony spent many nights at the Olympics in his hotel room depressed and wanting to go home.

The Denver Nuggets star was demoted to the bench during the Athens Games, in which the NBA players lost three times and finished with the bronze medal.

"I would play my (video) games, and hope and pray that it would be over with," he said in Friday's editions of The Denver Post. "I was in my little funk. I didn't want to be involved with nobody."

The former Syracuse star said things started going wrong for him in the first game, a 92-73 loss to Puerto Rico.

"People were looking at me like I was selfish and I was only thinking about myself," he said.

He said getting benched was a shock after being a high school All-American, an NCAA champion with Syracuse as a freshman and a rookie standout with the Nuggets.

"That would affect anybody," Anthony told the newspaper. "I'm not saying I'm the greatest player in the world, but I've never sat on nobody's bench."

He said he respects coach Larry Brown, whose Detroit Pistons won the NBA title this year, but thinks the U.S. team would have done better if it played looser.

"He still makes mistakes," Anthony said. "We weren't the Detroit Pistons. We didn't have 90 games to play together. We had two weeks."

Still, Anthony said he would like to play in the 2008 Olympics.

"I got unfinished business to take care of," he said.
    ----------------------------------

What a crybaby. I knew he had been complaining about lack of playing time, but complaining that he wasn't starting is ridiculous. I lost what little respect I had for him after reading this article. The only saving grace he left for himself is claiming that he's willing to go back.

carmelo is actually a decent shooter and that was the one thing the us team needed. he would have done great in the games if he got some decent playing time. why wade and marbury got sooo much playing time for shooting horribly and creating silly turnovers instead of lebron and carmelo is beyond me.

I feel sorry for Anthony, I really do.

As he said, he has never known what its like to not be the first option on any team he has played on. He didnt realise this was a team sport untill now and that he had to take being benched with class and dignity.

    After three....

    1, 2, 3...

    Ohhhh....

Well, shouldn't they have given him more playing time? I think if Larry gave him a chance, he could of proved himself out on the court. It wouldn't have hurt w/ the way the team played.

This is his national team and every report I read talked about how lackadaisical he was in practice, and how he looked unconcerned, and not part of the team.

He needs to show he deserves PT in the practices with the squad, not by hoping that his previous achievements would guarantee him a starting berth.

In his defence, he's only acting like the immature 19yo that he is.

LeBron deserved more PT. Melo should never have been invited. He whined his way onto the team (just like he tried to whine his way onto the All-Star team), whined to be played ahead of more proven guys, and whined when he wasn't coddled enough.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm allowed to "feel" when I don't get my way at work.

"I don't feel like going to that meeting or giving it my all - I've always been a lead and don't like playing 2nd fiddle or taking orders from that guy."

    "You're fired"

    That's more like it.

I don't know why you guys continuously compare your job to these high profile athletes. When you are 1 in only about 100 people in the world who can do what you do, then you can make that comparison.

Do you disagree? You don't think people that are hard to replace can get away with more on their jobs?

I think that this is true - people who are hard to replace can get away with more on their jobs. However, I still think it is WRONG for these people to whine and act like little crybabies and display an inflated ego. I think Allen Iverson set a great example of how to behave at the Olympics, actually. And Carmelo Anthony's statements just seem immature to me, in contrast to that. That's why I rolled my eyes, because Rocket River and you seemed to defend him for that. I don't think it's a big deal, I just don't see how one can criticize people for pointing out that these statements are immature...that's all.

I didn't criticize anyone for calling him immature, I think he's immature, I criticized the post for comparing himself to Carmello Anthony. And I admit, that is something that irks me, whenever someone says, "well if I tried that at my job".

    Okay, understood.

Well, I think it is a FACT that people can get away with more if they have unusual skills - but it is not something I find fair...so I wouldn't criticize people who compare themselves to such people. Even though the reality is that it is not the case, basic standards of dignity and modesty should be respected by everyone.

Carmelo has every right to feel this way.

But this isn't the way to deal with it. He shouldn't be venting to the media like an idiot.
