I hate the ads, but I have to admit, I go early....not so I can grab a good seat (though that's a hell of a nice bonus)....but so that I can catch the movie previews.

I live for previews. It's like half a dozen little head rushes.

Oh, I agree with that Pole, I won't go to a movie if I'm going to miss the trailers. I could definitely live with 30 minutes of previews before the movie started.

Those spots they run before the movie starts are a minor irritation, tho I must admit that i pay them no attention anyway..you could ask me right after the movie what they were...and I wouldnt be able to tell you..

But how bout the constant barrage of trivia and local ads that are played during the time before showtime? Anybody else get there early enough to see these gems? Or are these just in the theater I go to?

    Ugh..

Yeah, those are pretty lame. At the Angelika here in Dallas, they have word scramblers.

    Hmmm?

Yes, but they also have beer, so that's a good trade-off.

Yeah, but you have to go down stairs to get it, and by the time you do, you've missed 5-10 minutes of the movie. The best are those places where the servers come to you.

Regardless, I love the Angelika because there are no commercials. Of course, every movie I've seen there since I moved to Dallas has had this horrible preview of some lously looking French movie called "On Guard". RM95's Girl and I want to gouge our eyes out every time we see that monstrosity.

Those are what really bother me. They want to make sure you never have a minute of silence, time to talk with your friends, or time to think, even if you get there early. When something is that loud and takes up one large wall of the room, you're going to pay attention to it whether you like it or not. Somehow it's not as easily ignored as a TV commercial. The same little trivia bits get circulated over and over again.

Well, I've never seen one with more noise than the background music.

We're talking a glass of beer. That, and a side of french fries with mayo.

How fitting, my 10,000th post is a Pulp Fiction reference. Thanks A-Train! :D

I love watching the trailers. It's the commercials before them that suck.

The worst is the Coca-Cola short film by some student director. The one with the ticket usher saving the girl from the ketchup is horrible. I think I've seen that close to 20 times and I hate it more each time I see it.

I don't get why the commercials are so bad. I always just talk with my boys, and even play the little guessing games.

I find them pretty boring, especially the Nascar Coke commercials. I do like the Coke mini-films though. They are cool. I think I would pay an extra 1$ or 2$ to get a movie without all of the damn commericals. If a movie showtime says 1:30pm, then there is no way that it will start before 1:45pm. I always get there early though, I have to have the center row, center seats, makes the movie better for me... ;)

you realize that trailers are.... drum roll, please.... commercials, right?

i would sit through 8 hours of commercials if the movie theater industry would focus on the real problem making moviegoing such a hell: the dip****s who talk during the feature, either to their friends, or via cel phone.

I'm willing to be he does realize that. You realize that there is...drum roll, please....a difference between the commercials for upcoming movies and commercials for Coke or luggage, right?

BTW, I absolutely concur with your last point. RM95's Girl has been embarassed by my yelling at someone on numerous occasions.

a commercial is designed to sell a product. movies are a product; and trailers are designed to sell them. therefore, it's a commercial. period. there's really no difference at all.

that one may be more enjoyable, or more appealing isn't necessarily the issue. i mean, we could say the same thing about trailers -- some simply don't appeal to me and waste my time. but the endgame is that everything that runs prior to your movie starting is there in hopes of convincing you to spend money.

i don't, nor have i ever understood the big deal. the ads are always before the trailers, not intermingled and they're almost always specially made for the theater so it's not like we're seeing standard issue commercials we have to sit through at home. besides, if not commercials, we'd just be subjected to 20 more viewings of... drum roll, please... advertising slides. and those have been in place as long as i've been going to the movie.

Uh...drum roll, please...that's not true. If they took out the "unenjoyable" commercials for coke or luggage before a movie, the movie would start about 10 minutes earlier. About five years ago, when a movie was slated to start at 7:00, the previews would start at 7:00 and the movie around 7:10-15. Now, if it says that a movie "starts" at 7:00, we get 10 minutes of non-movie related commercials, 10-15 minutes of previews, and the movie would start at around 7:20-25. We weren't subjected to more slides. Hell, even if you were, you could talk to the person you're with rather than having to watch poorly done commercials.

BTW, I've been to numerous movies that showed 4-5 commercials, showed the previews, then showed 1-2 more commercials.
